Hello guys. This is my film. It was quite a struggle to make, and it isn’t that great, but I had a lot of fun making it. My film is influenced heavily by Melanie Martinez’s Mrs.Potato Head as well as teen romance dramas.
Plot summary: A young woman, Sarah, is in her last year of High school when one of her classmates, Ben, nervously asks her out. Having had a secret crush on him since seeing him for the first time in freshman biology, Sarah is surprised that Ben is finally reciprocating her feelings. Having struggled with self-esteem issues her entire life, Sarah is ecstatic to be in a relationship with her first love. Sarah is on the way to Ben’s house one day to watch a movie when she sees him standing in his backyard kissing another childhood friend, Ashley. Seething with anger, Sarah runs home sobbing and wondering why she isn’t as pretty as Ashely or why she wasn’t also a beauty pageant winner like her friend. She shuts herself inside her room for days, refusing to eat and only leaving to use the restroom. On one of her trips to the bathroom, she notices the dolls of her little sister scattered in front of her room. She screams out of frustration and kicks it at them, losing her footing and hitting her head on a rail, losing consciousness. When Sarah wakes up, she realizes that she is no longer in her body, but floating as an astral projection and watching the events of the past week of her life. Sarah follows her past self, realizing just how pathetic she had looked and how she was being used by Ben, who had been using her to get closer to Ashley. Sarah sees him gossiping to his friends about how ugly she was while waiting for her at the cafeteria and him mocking her behind her back. She sees him physically bullying her brother, as well as calling him names. Sarah flies around experiencing her relationship with Ben through third person perspective, becoming more and more aware of who he is as a person, while simultaneously experiencing her own good deeds. As she begins to finally accept her own beauty, Sarah’s real body is jolted awake by her sister. Sarah dumps Ben and lives confidently ever after.
Research element:To create this film, I researched and watched many popular teen dramas to give me an understanding of how they worked. I used this research to learn of elements of these dramas, such as; betrayal of long term friends; betrayal of a recent or prospective significant other; and solution to all problems, leading to a happy ending. I worked to incorporate these into my film, combined with the style of filming used in Melanie Martinez’s Mrs.Potato Head music video. This film is heavily influenced by the fact that materialistic substitutions cannot replace or fix problems that are psychological. Based on my previous research, I have found that cosmetic plastic surgery generally has a negative impact on the mental health of people that undergo it. The psychological damage that comes with the surgery usually has a major impact on people’s self esteem. In the article “Cosmetic Surgery and Psychological Issues”, two medical doctors cite statistics and different studies that show the negative impact that plastic surgery can have on one’s mental health. According to the doctors, “studies consistently suggested an increased risk of suicide among women who have undergone cosmetic breast augmentation surgery”(Sansone and Sansone). In the case of this film, Sarah’s boyfriend, Ben, is a metaphor for plastic surgery and she goes through the process of learning the negatives that come with him.
Creative style: My video drew influence from Melanie Martinez’s Mrs.Potato Head. A dark theme introduced under the false pretense of being happy and cheerful. Because my video is targeted at a younger audience, I didnt let it get too dark, like Melanie usually does. Instead, I tried to transition the video into a more comedic theme, where my message is portrayed, but not too seriously. Like Melanie, I began my film using mostly dark and dreary colors, before transitioning the theme of my video using a bright neon one. The main inspiration for my video comes from the way that Mrs.Potato Head is filmed. A young woman going through a crisis is, against her will, sent to “another world”, where she gets to face her problems head on. Through this virtual experience, the main character should be able to come to a realization to help them overcome their real world problem.
Target audience: The target audience for my film is young adults, specifically women. Because young female women are statistically the most likely to receive plastic surgery, which is strongly correlated with self-esteem issues, I tried to create a motivational film in which young teens are able to relate. I decided to exclude the use of plastic surgery in my film. Instead of promoting cosmetic surgery, and expressing its horrors in my film, I try to instead dig deeper toward the root of the problem: Self-esteem issues. With this in mind, I modeled my film after cliche teen dramas, a genre in which is popular amongst teens. Young teenage love and angst will help viewers of this film relate to their own lives and associate themselves with Sarah. This film will appeal to young women who are going through tough times accepting their own beauty and worth. The film hopes to aid these women in accepting their feminist side, in a world where women are portrayed to need men to succeed.

Kenny this was sooo good to read and I believe would be even better to watch in a film. There was a turn of events and happy ending as a great thriller should give and the eerie suspense of what would happen to Sarah also gave me the satisfaction I wanted from reading the story. Honestly I hate cliffhanger endings or weird and eerie endings like when thrillers cut to the ending with no resolution. This does the exact opposite of that and I love it.

Hello Leonard
I’m glad you liked it. I had a fun time scrolling through gifs and pictures to find the ones I used to compose my film. I tried to give off a “tripping on drugs” vibe. For some reason I never considered her reaction to being projected from her body, so thanks for bringing that up.
Hey Kenny,
I really liked the idea of Sarah being able to see her relationship unfold from a third person perspective. I’m also glad that she was able to regain confidence and live her life freely. The story escalated very quickly, but there’s a lot to unpack and it easy to follow. I really liked this about the plot.

Hello Ikra
Thanks for the kind words. I know the plot was a lot to unpack but I wanted to focus more on the visuals. I figured I would have more fun expressing the story through the images, and I really did! I’m glad you liked the plot though.
Your trailer was absolutely amazing and really interesting to watch. You had great visuals which gave me so much to look at. In addition, I like the concept you used, I am sure it is something we all wish we could do (Dr Strange style). It would be cool to see how she would react ot being an astral projection since most people would probably think they turned into a ghost and died.
Hi Kenny, this was a great trailer! I almost died when Winnie the Pooh astral projected. I love all the visuals you chose to showcase Sarah’s feelings in the whole situation.

Hello Kenny. I believe it is very interesting that she had this third person view in order to realize that Ben was not good for her. The trailer itself did really well the images where spot on and really told the story. From finding love to being the confident women Sarah is now.

Hello Masbah
Thank you. I got the film idea from Melanie Martinez’s Mrs.Potato Head. I’m glad you enjoyed the images because I spent a lot of time scrolling through gifs trying to find ones to include in my film. Thanks again for the kind words, they mean a lot!
Relationships are a give and take. Lack of reciprocations in it will ultimately lead to failure and heartbreaks, leading to destructive actions, e.g., suicides are a common occurrence in our society. And the third-person perspective in your film helps the teens in this era to see how these actions are irrelevant and completely irrational. Kudos!

Hello Jacob
Really like your analysis. I’d say I agree entirely with your opinion. I’m really glad you saw this in my film, and I appreciate that you enjoyed it. Thank you!
Hello Kenny, I like your topic because it was one of the more unique genres out of everyone elses, and your video felt like a complete trip lol.

Hey Xavier
Thank you. I had a hard time coming up with a plot, so I just chose something popular among my target audience(young, teenage girls) and combined it with something else I enjoy(drugs).
Kidding about that second part.
Hey Kenny!
I can’t believe that it took some sort of divine intervention for Sarah to realize that her boyfriend is toxic. At the end, she should have destroyed his car with a bat or something like that just to be petty. I like how you decided to talk about body image and the way you incorporated it in your trailer. When I saw Angela Basset at the end of your trailer, I was so happy. She’s literally the incarnation of girl power. Great job!

Hello Michaella
I didn’t want Sarah to have to go to jail haha. I agree she should have gotten some sort of revenge, though.
I’m glad you liked the inclusion of Basset, I knew I hit a goldmine when I saw a gif of her.
Hello Kenny! This trailer was really food. The psychedelic images and music that you included in the video complement very well with the astral message you want to achieve. The plot is about that Sarah realizes that she has been betrayed by her friends and realizes that her boyfriend has been using her. Also, it gives a lesson that you have to love and accept yourself .

Thank you for the kind words. I really enjoyed adding the images, and I spent a lot of time choosing ones I liked, so I’m really glad that you enjoyed them. I really enjoyed your film as well. Thanks again for the kind words!
Hey Kenny! I like how you made your trailer trippy AF. As Joe Rogan loves to say, drugs allow you to open your mind and be more connected with the world and the universe. As your title is Astral Realization, this is exactly what Joe Rogan would love to see. Not only that, but you tied in themes of romance and drama that young adults like ourselves face while we are growing up. This lets the audience really connect with the movie. Great work!

Hello Jason
Glad you liked it. It was my target to make it seem as if she were in a drugged state, so I’m happy that people are able to see it. I really couldn’t think of a film plot, so I’m glad everyone is appreciating the one I ended up coming up with.
On a side note, Joe Rogan is the man!
Hey Kenny! It’s nice that you were being modest about what you did, but this piece is actually really good! I haven’t done LSD, but I’d assume it would feel like watching your clip lol. I loved your abstract visuals. Also, your genre of romance is unique compared to the other clips that I saw. Good job!

Hey Matin
Thank you, that means alot. I’ve been getting into romance dramas on Netflix recently, so I thought I’d create my film in that genre. I focused mainly on the visuals because I know my story was kind of strange. I’m glad you liked it.
Hello Kenny! Based on what I saw from the trailer, this movie where betrayal will play a big part. This is the first romance genre I saw in the assignments and I want to congratulate you. It’s not easy to come up with a movie that involves romance and drama and is not bland. The part where Sarah wakes up but is not in her body and begins seeing the actions of the past is something very unique that makes the story way more interesting. Excellent!

Hello Grindald.
Thanks for the kind words. I randomly started watching romance dramas on Netflix during quarantine, so I thought I’d try to create one. A lot of them are cliche and honestly kind of stupid, so I tried to differ from anything I had ever seen.
