I enjoyed the Commedia, even though I am an atheist. I feel as though for the modern day reader, the religious context of the writing does not play as big of part. When Dante wrote this work, religion was extremely important in everyday life. But today, religion is almost an after thought to most people. I looked at this Commedia as a piece of fictional writing, instead of the word of a god. Which I believe most people would do when reading this work today. Over time, Dante’s writing has lost the importance of being a secular piece and become a piece for everyone to appreciate. I believe you don’t need to agree with the writers views to enjoy their work.

Although religion isn’t the center of life anymore as it used to be, i can not agree that this work is only attractive to secular readers as fiction. Yes it has its absurd stories instilled in its work but this work talks a lot about life. It shows the power of love, it discusses what people do in life and in society that lands them in trouble such as adultery and treason and so on. The overall message of the work can be seen beyond religious connotation.
I definitely agree with you totally on this topic. Religion really is not as important in today’s society, so therefore the Commedia can be enjoyed regardless of one’s religious beliefs. The overall themes and messages are very deep, and definitely can be appreciated without being religious. Viewing this piece of work as a fictional story has definitely increased its popularity.
