Baruch Club Fair!

Every freshman in college needs to find a solution to adapting into the college life. One may not find the pace as easy as high school, making it more difficult to find people with common interests to befriend. However, club fairs make it much easier to do this. By joining clubs with specific interests or goals, friends are easy to find. Baruch’s club fair, held on October 10th, was remarkable because of it’s compelling variety and friendly students. The lively event brought crowds of freshmen closer to getting a chance to fit in. There were clubs for hobbies such as fashion, archery, anime, and many others. Cultural and fitness oriented clubs were also available. There were also a large variety of honor societies, sororities, and fraternities for social and business interests. The event was very exciting and a great experience to take part in.

Syria’s use of Chemical Weapons

Earlier this year, Israeli officials claimed having proof of evidence of Syria’s usage of chemical weapons. Attacks were allegedly used by the Syrian government, causing the U.N. to intervene in the Syrian civil war. The U.S. insisted on finding solid evidence before taking any action, which was difficult due to the conditions required to uncover such accusations. Months later, evidence of chemical weapons in Syria were confirmed and the U.N immediately took action. Secretary of State John Kerry established in a speech that chemical weapons are “a threat to international peace and security anywhere they might be used.” An Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was put together, with the goal of eliminating all chemical weapons in Syria by mid-2014.

Violence is a serious issue, not only on a domestic spectrum, but a on a global one as well. One of the attacks left more than 1,400 people dead, including more than 400 children, displaying the intense situation in Syria. The intervention of the U.N. was beneficial on a worldwide scale; regulation will hopefully prevent future casualties in wars.

Global Terror

The radical Islamic terrorist group known as  Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in Somalia.  The bombing occurred at 11 AM on October 19th at a cafe in Beledweyne, a small city 200 miles northwest of the capital Mogadishu.  These attacks come four weeks after Al-Shabab terrorized the Westgate Mall In Nairobi, Kenya, where they singled out and killed non-Muslim targets.  Because of this the terrorist group has become an issue of international concern.  Al-Shabab has been a constant threat in Somalia, rising to power as a nationalist movement opposing an Ethiopian invasion that was backed by the United States.  Their influence is so great that they are able to pull off large scale assaults on United Nation buildings in Somalia’s capital.  However, in the past few months the African Union has been successful in their campaign to remove Al-Shabab from major cities in Somalia.  In retaliation to these actions by the African Union, Al-Shabab has responded with frequent suicide attacks.  The death toll is estimated to be somewhere between 15-25 people from the bombing on the 19th.

Underage Murder

In a small town near Oklahoma City, 3 youths were charged with murder. All under the age of 18, one teenager shot a woman who was spending her time getting fit with an afternoon jog. When arrested, and questioned, the teenager responded with a chilling answer to why he murdered the woman. He told the officer that he was bored and looking for a thrill. All three are looking to spend there life in prison. Hii Power chose the topic of violence because it is a worldwide problem. There are many reasons to why people commit murder, but killing someone because the person was bored is unacceptable. Todays teenagers need to find hobbies to keep themselves busy. If these teenagers had something important in there life like sports, education or music, this murder could have been prevented. i believe that this affects my first semester at Baruch because i want to try to keep myself busy before i do something irrational.

President Obama Announces Gun Control Actions

gun-control-obama

Gun control has always been a heavily debated issue but the recent tragedies of Sandy Hook, Treyvon Martin and the Navy Yard shootings have triggered a call for immediate action to be taken against guns and firearms. The Senate and Congress have not allowed for new legislation since the shootings but President Obama along with Vice President Biden say they are determined to make changes. Their new legislation would expand criminal background checks and make gun trafficking a federal crime. Another policy would make it illegal for people to bring back American made firearms distributed to other countries. The President believes that these policies are “basic actions” that should have been imposed a long time ago and doesn’t understand why Congress fails to see that. Those against gun control believe President Obama is misusing his executive powers to impose these restrictions. They believe he is taking away people’s rights to bear arms, a constitutional right, which is explicitly stated in the second amendment. Currently, the gun control proposals have been put on hold while the Obama administration, the Senate and Congress try to come to an agreement on the government budget in order to end the shutdown.

2012-2013 has seen an increase in violent attacks, leading to the death of many innocent people. Gun control has become a huge concern because if anyone is able to obtain a firearm, more mindless shootings will occur and places like school would not be safe.
