The radical Islamic terrorist group known as Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in Somalia. The bombing occurred at 11 AM on October 19th at a cafe in Beledweyne, a small city 200 miles northwest of the capital Mogadishu. These attacks come four weeks after Al-Shabab terrorized the Westgate Mall In Nairobi, Kenya, where they singled out and killed non-Muslim targets. Because of this the terrorist group has become an issue of international concern. Al-Shabab has been a constant threat in Somalia, rising to power as a nationalist movement opposing an Ethiopian invasion that was backed by the United States. Their influence is so great that they are able to pull off large scale assaults on United Nation buildings in Somalia’s capital. However, in the past few months the African Union has been successful in their campaign to remove Al-Shabab from major cities in Somalia. In retaliation to these actions by the African Union, Al-Shabab has responded with frequent suicide attacks. The death toll is estimated to be somewhere between 15-25 people from the bombing on the 19th.
