Walking New York with Prufrock
December 1, 2014
For I have known them all already, known them all: |
Have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons, |
I have measured out my life with coffee spoons; |
I know the voices dying with a dying fall |
Beneath the music from a farther room. |
So how should I presume? |
Eliot: “Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” |
The first place in New York that popped up in my mind when I read these amazing lines was Coney Island Luna Park. Every fall, the park closes until spring comes around. The place that provides many people with joy, happy laugh, and excitement becomes empty and sad. Even usually bright colors of the park design look muted. This reminds me that our life is “seasonal”: bright and happy moments are interchanged with the moments when we feel lost and lonely.
