Exploring New York City featuring Paulina
November 30, 2014
I had an enjoyable time making this map as it reminded me of many experiences and memories that I have. I also had an epiphany and realized how much of NYC I’m missing out on and still have yet to discover. I also thought about how lucky I am to be living in such an awesome city!

When I completed this blog assignment, I realized that I should explore New York City more than before. Most of the markers are crowded in the places where I visit the most. There are so many other locations that I would enjoy by myself, or with friends.

News relate to the story “Giribala”
November 29, 2014
As our reading “Giribala” is related to women status in India, I would like to share some women news in India. I always heard the news about “girls were raped by man in India.” I felt that it’s very horrible that a six years old girls were raped by man. Women has no status at all in Indian’s society. Here are examples of raping girls news in India.
BANGALORE’S CHILD ABUSE CASES
JULY: Two gym instructors at the Vibgyor International School arrested and charged with the gang rape of a six-year-old girl.
AUGUST: 63-year-old retired government employee teaching at a public school is accused of stripping a girl and molesting her. He is said to have abused seven girls over 45 days.
OCTOBER 21: Three-year-old nursery student was allegedly sexually abused at another Bangalore school.
OCTOBER 30: 37-year-old Hindi teacher accused of raping a six-year-old in a bathroom
Jamaica Kincaid “Girl” and Mahasweta Devi “Giribala”
November 29, 2014
The short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid is different from most of the story we have read so far, especially the length of the story. I took few minutes to read these two pages short story. The basic theme of this story is about feminism. There are two characters in the story, which are a mom and her daughter. In the beginning of reading, I find that it is confusing that to find out who is speaking in the dialogue. The dialogue between them did not clarify who is speaking at all. But when I read it again, it is better for me to understand. Based on the history, the structure of patriarchy is dominant in the most of the family. Woman doesn’t have any rights to speak in the family. As the society is changing, women obtain more rights in the family role and in the society. This story tells about the mother is teaching her daughter to be a perfect woman in the family and society. The story has so many to-do lists, for example “this is how you sweep a corner; wash the white clothes on Monday.” I feel like the author is trying to convince us woman is becoming more important for men’s life. Without woman in the family, man is hard to become successful. The mom teaches her how to wash clothes, clean house, and cook. Being a perfect woman is an important factor that determines the successful of your husband and enhances your status in the society.
The short story “Giribala” by Mahasweta Devi has a similar theme comparing to the story “girl.” The theme of feminism applies to both story “Girl” and “Giribala.” Mahasweta Devi is an Indian writer that actively writes about women issues in India. As we know today, India is a developing country in the world. Many people in India are still living under the poverty line. Apart from economic status, women role is also a big issue in India. Men are dominating in the society. The character “Giribala” is a fourteen years old girl who was married because of money. It is hard to believe that a 14 years old girl was married and their parents allowed the marriage happened. The story also reflects the problems of class standing. People who are in upper class didn’t treat the lower class people respectful. Man treats their wives violently and they don’t even have the rights to speak in the family. Their role is to give birth to the man. After reading the story, I felt that the India’s government should have more policies to protect the rights of women in the society, for example education for changing the attitudes of man towards woman and setting up laws to forbid man treats their wives violently.
