The World Cup is an international football event, hosted by one elected nation every four years, similar to the Olympics. Over 60 countries fight for 31 spots to compete in the tournament. The 2014 World Cup will be hosted by Brazil who are also favorites to win the cup. There are still 10 spots open to qualify as of October 19, 2013. The World Cup is the most watched event in the world and with the hype and tourism, brings a lot of revenue to almost every nation in the world. People tune in to watch the games on television, visit local settings to watch the games with others, and some go to the host country to partake in the festivities. In addition, some countries’ economies are hurt if certain counties do not qualify. For example, on October 15 2013, Mexico was on the brink of not qualifying. Had they not, the U.S. economy would have been hurt having generated much revenue due to the high population of Mexican immigrants and Mexican broadcasting channels showing the game.
