Campaign Ad

In Hilary Clinton’s short but sweet campaign ad “Brave,”  the setting of the ad seems as though Hilary visited a school campus to hear the things that young people are fearing for the future. We see a young girl of Hispanic decent expressing her fear for her family’s future. The young girl is addressing Hilary directly and explaining that she is afraid her parents are going to be deported. The topic of deportation is a touchy subject for many young children, for many Hispanic children are first generation citizens. Though Hilary Clinton’s response is strong, you can hear the passion in her voice when responding to the issue of deportation. As the girl is sharing her feelings, she does a good job of keeping herself together, but understandably breaks down when mentions the idea of losing her parents. Hilary, knowing the challenges the young girl faces on a day to day basis, calls the girl over to reassure she is being heard. Clinton’s response to the fear this young girl, and many other immigrant families, have was to not worry, it’s the president’s job worry about how to keep them safe. Hilary stated that she will do everything in her power to make sure that the little girl can feel safe that she will not be losing her parents, or anyone else in her family for that matter. The perception of illegal immigrants that Clinton’s campaign ad gives is a positive one. Shining a positive light on immigrant families is something we do not see everyday, especially when it comes to politics. Hilary tells the little girl that she needs to be brave for her family and to be happy, because her family has made sacrifices for her to be happy and successful. Hilary knows why it is important to have immigrants in this country with showing that she understands why other races come to this country. This country is the land of opportunity and for decades people have made their way here to achieve those goals. Hilary Clinton’s ad makes sure that people can see it is a positive thing and an important thing to keep our immigrants safe.

In Donald Trump’s short but horrific campaign ad “Two Americas”, the formation of the ad is more generic. We see many difference scenes flashing by with flashy words and a voice over. The ad starts by saying that “in Hilary Clinton’s America, the system stays rigged against Americans,” insinuating that immigration and refugees cause problems for the everyday American. The words chosen in this ad give the viewer a bad taste in their mouth about refugees and immigrants. For example, when talking about Syrian refugees, the speaker uses the words “flood in” making it seem as if there’s an excessive amount and there’s no more room for them in our country. Unlike Hilary’s ad, Trump uses a different approach. He wants to show immigration in a bad light. He only mentions immigrants as criminals, giving the viewer a narrow perception and to jump to the conclusion that all immigrants are criminals. The purpose of this is to make the viewer feel unsafe and as if something needs to change. Once the ad gets the viewer to feel this way, the speaker jumps into saying that with Trump as president, we will have a safer America. Again, the usage of language is very important in this campaign ad. The words “terrorist” and “dangerous” are used frequently to give a feeling of fear. Hilary’s campaign ad was structured to make the viewer feel reassured and safe, whereas Trump’s ad is used to scare us and hate immigrants.
