There are about 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States.
There are about 6.1 million felons without the ability to vote in the United States.
How does 17.1 million votes sound for the next election? Like a big deal right?
I propose the following:
Create a FB page labeled “Our Election 2020” and for safety purposes have a legal friend claim a vote by writing “My Undocumented Vote Counts ” and submit their vote for whoever the person feels should win the presidency” For felons “My Unregistered Vote Counts” etc. until we reach the threshold for each group. I understand that this will not change the outcome of who becomes president and also that more than likely we can assume who will win in our election but having the media cover this additional outcome will be some sort of disturbance in this presidential race. Reaching out to celebrities to promote this as well as social activists will help these underrepresented groups be heard. Forcing political figures to look at these results and numbers but more importantly to discuss these issues that are always grazed over but neglected in presidential races is an issue to be tackled.
I recently became American and one of the most exciting things that I could look forward to is to vote. This may be a short-lived sentiment but to know that I can now vote is an unparalleled feeling. Reaching out to these groups and giving them a venue to at least express who they would vote if they could would be meaningful to many…about 17.1 million to be as accurate as possible.
Another short term goal that we can do now is:
- Have uncomfortable conversations with your friends about immigration and the jail system
- Read articles not only that are politically left but also right
