Weekly Blog Assignment Instructions
Careful and thoughtful reading is essential for understanding the texts we will be reading this semester and contributing to class discussion in a fruitful manner. This weekly blog assignment is designed to help you focus your reading and class preparation and to provide a resource when you are asked to lead class discussion. It will also provide you a critical resource as you begin to work on your papers for the course.
Once a week (see the list below) you will submit 1 sentence selected from the assigned reading that you think is an “important” sentence for understanding the broader argument and meaning of the text. Please write the sentence into the blog post and include the page number (if appropriate). Your sentence should be accompanied by a short paragraph (250-300 words) explaining why you think it is an “important” sentence for understanding the text and the author as well the questions it raises for class discussion. Please submit your post to the blog by 11:59 the night before the class you are assigned. (I.e. those in the Monday group should submit posts by Sunday night at 11:59 pm; those in the Wednesday group should submit posts by Tuesday night at 11:59 pm)
On the day of the week when you do not submit a blog post, you will read the posts of your classmates and comment on 1 post. In the comment you should reflect on the sentence and interpretation offered, raising questions and suggestions about how to refine and advance the analysis further, whether by drawing upon material in the same text or other texts we have encountered this semester. You should comment on different people each week, so that by the end of the semester you have commented on everyone in the other section at least once. Also, please try to comment on posts by people who have not yet received comments (for example, if there are two blog posts that interest you, one of which already has a comment, please comment on the person who does not have one). Please submit comments to the blog by 1:00 pm before class.
Blog assignments are due to the course blog site as a post (please do not contribute as a comment) the night before class (Monday people submit postings Sunday night; Wednesday people submit posting Tuesday night).
