Project 3 – Literature in the US (Dyslexia)
Literacy is everywhere, it allows us to communicate with one another, and be efficient individuals. Barnes and Mercer states, “The Westernised school system promotes a particular notion of the skills necessary to achieve social and economic competence.” We begin to realized that literature are actually a set of skills that are put together. The National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) applies the task-based and skilled-based definition to literacy. The 1992 and 2003 task-based (conceptual) definition of literacy talks about “the ability to use printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential.” Meanwhile, the recent 2003 skills-based (operational) definition of literacy talks about, “successful use of printed material being a product of word-level reading skills, and higher level literacy skills.” To add on, the definition of word-level reading skills refers to recognizing words, whereas, higher level literacy skills refers to, draw appropriate inferences from the continuous text.
On behalf of the definitions for literacy, it’s fundamental towards being a contributing individual in society. Although printed material are being computerized in this day and age, symbols are what’s left of it. Literature is still a requirement when it comes to reading a manual, or related to following simple instructions. Improving literature in the U.S. is improving the educational system. However, before making any set changes, research and analysis on how to conduct any changes must be done. Reevaluating how the educational system of the U.S. has performed in the past presents weaknesses that have occurred, leading to opportunities for improvement. Then, comparing the analysis to effectiveness of school according to an increase in literacy rates, is the first approach. Literature starts at the beginning of time for an individual, this means the first year of birth elongating past adolescence. A proceed that seems simple, for the common individual, however, obstacles for some becomes challenging.
Dyslexia makes it difficult to match letters on printed material with the sounds they make, and or the combinations of letters they make. Children and adults will struggle learning a second language, yet, it doesn’t question their overall intelligence. Dyslexia is an unexpected condition in reading, without any affect to an individual’s intelligence. In fact, dyslexic individuals are actually fast, creative thinkers along with strong reasoning abilities. Individuals with dyslexia, being my audience for this project, experience low self-esteem and confidence because of their disability. The perception of being different from others in the learning process that occurs in school leads them to belief they are incapable. The challenge dyslexia imposes on these children intending to learning like their other peers, is this advertisement’s main focus reaching out to them. This ad will recognize them as individuals that can contribute in society. Their obstacle is only temporary and can be overcome by following set procedures at a young age.
