Project 3- final version

Literacy is everywhere, it allows us to communicate with one another, and be efficient individuals. Barnes and Mercer states, “The Westernised school system promotes a particular notion of the skills necessary to achieve social and economic competence.” We begin to realized that literature are actually a set of skills that are put together. The National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) applies the task-based and skilled-based definition to literacy. The 1992 and 2003 task-based (conceptual) definition of literacy talks about “the ability to use printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential.” Meanwhile, the recent 2003 skills-based (operational) definition of literacy talks about, “successful use of printed material being a product of word-level reading skills, and higher level literacy skills.” To add on, the definition of word-level reading skills refers to recognizing words, whereas, higher level literacy skills refers to, draw appropriate inferences from the continuous text.

On behalf of the definitions for literacy, it’s fundamental towards being a contributing individual in society. Although printed material are being computerized in this day and age, symbols are what’s left of it, and literature still plays a role in understanding it. Literature is still a requirement when it comes to reading a manual, or following simple instructions. Improving literature in the U.S. is improving the educational system. According to “A dyslexic child in the classroom” an article from, www.Dyslexia.com, “In order to be able teach, as far as possible, according to each child’s educational needs, it is essential to see him or her as a whole person…” However, before making any set changes, research and analysis on how to conduct any changes must be done. Reevaluating how the educational system of the U.S. has performed in the past presents to us weaknesses that have occurred, leading to opportunities for improvement. Then, comparing the analysis to the effectiveness of school according to an increase in literacy rates, is the first approach. Self-analysis and metacognition, on behalf of the educational system, is the solution to eliminating labels such as dyslexia. As stated in article from www.dyslexia.com, “…we have to let go of outmoded viewpoints that a dyslexic child must fail, in order to be identified.” Literature starts at the beginning of time for an individual, this means the first year of birth elongating past adolescence. A process that seems simple, for the common individual, however, obstacles for some becomes challenging.

Dyslexia makes it difficult to match letters on printed material with the sounds they make, and or the combinations of letters they make. In fact, according to a journal on Understanding dyslexia in children through human development theories, “In 2002, the International Dyslexia Association…(defines dyslexia as)… a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin.” Children and adults will struggle learning a second language, yet, it doesn’t question their overall intelligence. Dyslexia is an unexpected condition in reading, without any affect to an individual’s intelligence. In fact, dyslexic individuals are actually fast, creative thinkers along with strong reasoning abilities. Individuals with dyslexia, being my audience for this project, experience low self-esteem and confidence because of their disability. According to, www.dyslexia.com, “In a positive and encouraging environment, a dyslexic child will experience the feeling of success and self-value.” The perception of being different from others in the process of learning that occurs in school leads them to belief they are incapable. The challenge dyslexia imposes on these children intending to learning like their other peers, is this advertisement’s main focus reaching out to them. This ad will recognize them as individuals that can contribute in society. Their obstacle is only temporary and can be overcome by following set procedures at a young age.

According to statistics, 5-10% of adults experience dyslexia. It’s a problem to the literature in America because we practice old approaches towards children’s education. This ad will be effective because dyslexia is not a diseases, however it is a lifetime condition that acquires support and patience at a young age. Once guided properly through the first years after birth, the child will learn to cope with dyslexia on his or her own. A publication that will reinforce this ad is the public library of New York, for most kids visit to read. By treating every child as our future, dyslexia shouldn’t separate them from the rest.
