The texts “Auntres Temps…” by Edith Wharton, as well as “What to the Slave is the fourth of July?” by Frederick Douglass, both describe how society remained the same throughout time, although social norms claim it has not and evolved into what is now the modern era. According to the text, time is challenged on how it is displayed in the present, where the past becomes the main concern, affecting present events. Race and color becomes the primary concern in society, although society has already “evolved” throughout time, reiterating it’s correlation to women and marriage as spoken in “Auntres Temps…” Society promotes itself as hypocritical as the past repetitively occurs through time while social norms testify them as unmodern regularities.
- ethos/pathos/logos
- Ethos: It talks about “modern social norms”, which personally experiences till this day. Although, social norms from the past haven’t been personally experienced, it can refer back to the text, for this is an argument of how “social norms” changed over time. One missing component that leaves this argument ambiguous is the time frames from which either texts occur.
- Pathos: When talking about “race and color” and “women and marriage” it all comes down to being hypocritical. This argument is missing an emotional appeal, but does refer to certain themes that may be considered as “trigger words.”
- Logos: The only logical appeal within this argument is that “social norms” constantly exist. However, there is no mentioning of a statistical citation, or in this case, either text.
- Toulmin Method
- Thesis: As the U.S. progresses over time, from the 1850’s to the 1900’s, social norms stunt any progress within the American society, to a modern ideology.
- Grounds: Hypocrisy remains amongst the majority of the population on behave of evolving from a past mentality of living, yet the people claim to support new ideologies such as freedom, or divorce to become accepted in the current era.
- Warrant: During 1852, Frederick Douglas spoke about the hypocrisy of the concept “freedom” supported by their slave owners, being part of the Declaration of Independence. Meanwhile, in the 1900’s, divorced women were looked down upon implicitly by blaming such event on the mothers. However, divorce was allowed within this time period.
- Backing: Comparing social norms from the time period of Frederick Douglas, and in the 1900’s, in which “Autres Temps” took place, for the progression of the American society, social norms may change, but the mentality of the population don’t, remaining in their past antique ideology.
- Qualifiers: The population that encourage a modern ideology, yet acknowledge the errors that existed in the society, perspire to correct the errors of their past ways are excluded form the hypocrites.
- Rebuttal: The progression of the U.S. from 1850’s to the 1900’s present a stunt mentality of the population, a hypocritical ideology that supports modern social norms without acknowledging the errors that preexisted.
By analyzing my own writing with either ethos/pathos/logos method or Toulmin’s method of rhetorical analysis, I can redo my arguments to better specify and organize my components to become a better persuader. The weaknesses are more visible and I can work more efficient on them to cover all corners to an argument.
