Journal #3

One of the benefits of being a Baruch Scholar is that there are so many resources offered to us. As a student, it is my responsibility to grab hold of these advantages because education is my top priority. When given an assignment as the Community Service Project, it made me realize that I cannot accomplish without others’ support.

This is a community, which means that we need to help one another. I need others’ help and others need my help. I have certain qualities or skills that others doesn’t have and others have knowledge and experiences that I don’t have. As a community we fill in for each other’s weaknesses. And the faculties, mentors, upperclassmen, and peers are people that are offering their help.

There is a librarian that we went to when researching for non-profitable organizations to volunteer in. We also asked our peers. Asking them for help was an efficient way to find an organization to volunteer in for our Community Service Project because they have previous experience in volunteering more than we do. They offered us several recommendations. One of the upperclassmen in my Christian Fellowship Club suggested us to try out the Father’s Heart Ministries. And a pastor in my church also suggested the same organizations. After we research this organization, we saw the various programs they offer and were interested. We went to volunteer for one weekend and enjoyed providing service. This is just the start of opening up and feeling more comfortable in using the resources.

After volunteering, I see that the people we serve in the soup kitchen and me are similar because we both use the resources offered to us. And not only should we take, but that we should also give. In three years, I still see myself studying and using the library resources.

I volunteered in many places in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens since I was a freshman in high school. So volunteering again in college is not a big change for me. I am just continuing where I left off.  Except that this time, I have the honoring role as in the Baruch as the Baruch Scholar in the Honors Program.

As a Baruch Scholar I feel to have a responsibility and the duty to give some of my time to serve the community. I am so grateful that I was able to receive a full scholarship for school. Without this scholarship, I would have to take out a student loan and worry about my debt when I graduate. But by being accepted into Baruch College as a Baruch Scholar, I am able to fully concentrate on my studies. And the least I can do is to help out here and there.

In the culture of service the Honors Program promotes, everyone helps out one another. It is like a family community where classmates in your block help you on your homework and exams. I really enjoy all the free food and resources the Baruch Scholar Program have to offer. And in the Baruch College as a whole school, I like how they are very eco-friendly. There are garbage and recycling bins everywhere. During the orientation, they gave us two water bottles for the scholars to use so we don’t have to use the plastic water bottles. I see that everyone here tries to keep everything clean in the lounges and these places are very comfortable. Everyone here, staffs and students, is helping one another and it encourages me to do the same.

Where have I been and Where am I going?

Hi, my name is Jessica. It is kind of difficult to summarize myself with only a few words. But I am a freshman in Baruch College and I am currently deciding what I would like to major in and what I like to do as a future career. But I do have a list of the job professions that I don’t want to participate in: doctor/nurse, lawyer and teacher. I have decided this even before I coming into college.

Last year, I went to Edward R Murrow High School where I major in the fine arts. I like to draw from photographs and paint them afterwards. As an art student, I had to make sure that my works are original, creative, and complete. Art project deadlines were tight and always near. I didn’t like it at first but then I started to adopt it into my life as a hobby. I made great friends who taught me so much. This was the place where I spent my four years in before coming to college.

Now I am in Baruch, another school where I will continue to learn and find my place in the world. I am currently searching through clubs and making new friends. I tried to get in delta sigma pi, which is a business fraternity club. However, I made some few mistakes and I lost my chance. I also visit Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. That was fun and I plan on staying in this club. I also plan on visiting the Absolute adrenaline club soon. I don’t know what the future lie ahead for me but I am still exploring different paths.
