The fashion district encloses the area between 5th Avenue and 9th Avenue and 34th Street and 41st Street in Manhattan. It includes Penn Station, the Port Authority Bus Terminal, so it is a busy hub with multiple subway lines and buses to transport people into and out of the famous district.
It is close to Times Square and is home to the Fashion Institute of Technology, the famous “Mood” fabric store (which is well known to the general public because of the hit reality competition show “Project Runway”), the A Wyndham Hotel, and the flagship Macy’s department store where the Thanksgiving Parade is held.
The exact area of the Garment District is rumored to be strategically placed. With its close proximity to 5th avenue, which was becoming more and more posh, the clothing could easily be brought to the store for sale. But it was far enough away so the wealthy customers wouldn’t see the factories, or the people who worked in them. Designers such as Chanel, Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Michael Kors along with the store Barney’s remain along 5th avenue though not nearly as much of the clothing is made so close by anymore.
