Hand Lettering Analysis

Michael Stevens

I chose to trace and sketch Bodoni. The typeface was designed to have a “stronger contrast between the thick and thins, unbracketed serifs, and strong vertical stress” (“Designing with Type 5” 44). Bodoni became known as a Modern typeface due to these particular features. I chose Bodoni because I thought the unbracketed serifs were unique and challenging to render. Also, despite having a low “readability” rank, I was attracted to the thick and thin relationship of the Bodoni faces. This project was not easy. I learned that sketching specific letters and even tracing is a difficult task. More so, I realized the importance of spacing between letters, words, and rows. As for drawing portion of this project, I learned the difference between a 2H, 2B, and 4B pencil and that erasing can sometimes cause more harm than good.
