In my research paper, rather than focusing on the negative effects of the internet, social media, and technology on the health of the body and mind, I will go into depth on positive outcomes that this internet age has brought about. Websites and platforms, such as the infamous WebMD, offer advice to people who are having symptoms. By linking doctors and hospitals to the public and their patients, social media allows people to self-diagnose conditions and find out what they could do to help their situations. I will go in depth on the advice and in-home remedies and mention Reddit, which is platform of forums where people can post questions and receive advice on countless topics. By diagnosing themselves people can be more educated when going to doctor’s appointments and that can lead to more accurate diagnosis. By allowing people the right to get advice and at home remedies they can alleviate their hysteria and pain and start feeling better before even visiting the doctor. To address mental help, I will go in depth on the new apps and platforms being used to link people suffering from forms of depression with professionals to talk about their problems and seek real world advice from real people from the click of a button. Suicides could be more easily prevented. I will include a counter argument and rebuttal however on WebMD’s notoriously grim diagnosis which turns out to be wrong and how that can cause hysteria. WebMD is known for telling people they have cancer, where in reality, it is only accurate a small percentage of instances. I will break down this point by saying how the technology is only going to advance and get more accurate and it is better to be suspicious and get it checked out rather than finding out when it is way too late.
