In the time of its inception and its integration into New York City, The Long Island City area served as primarily an industrial neighborhood. The area was filled with many factories and warehouses that were used by many during the 1800’s during the height of the industrial revolution. The areas close proximity to the water also allowed the neighborhood to be used as a port, remnants of the ports can still even be seen today in the modern day Gantry Park. At the turn of the 20th century however as New York City became less and less industrial and many of the warehouses and factory spaces I the neighborhood were left unused and abandoned. A vast majority of the space would be left unused for many years until the later parts of the 20th century and the early 21st century where it would remerge and establish itself as one of the new prime neighborhoods in New York City.
