There is a quote on page 90 of the novel passing that gives me a different impression of Clare Kendry’s sense of self and her passing as a white woman: “No, Clare Kendry cared nothing for the race. She only belonged to it.” To me, this implies that Clare was indifferent to her blackness. Like, as long as she could pass as a white woman and live an easier life than she would have as a black woman, complete with the privilege that pretending to be white provided her, she did not feel like she was doing anything wrong or immoral (the question of whether passing is immoral is also really intriguing) or disingenuous. Watching the movie, I thought Clare was mostly passing for convenience or because she was raised by white aunts, and it seemed that she was interested in reconnecting with her blackness. But this passage from the book makes me think that she didn’t really care about that reconnection, she was just kind of doing whatever she wanted to and whatever seemed fun to her.
