The final chapter to Larsen’s “Passing” was a climactic conclusion to the story. I think the ending and the way Clare lost her life had s deeper meaning than what was written. Normally, a Black character who does not fit in to societies standards is punished for not conforming. Yet, in this case, Passing’s ending sees Clare’s life end terribly because she desires to return to a life she has already fled from. She has everything a woman of her age desires in life, a child, a comfortable life, and a husband. However, she is still unhappy. I think it is here when she realizes that her happiness comes from socializing with the community she grew up in, she stops at nothing to achieve that, even going to extreme lengths.
