Passing is a riveting story about identity and belonging. The story centers around Irene, who is a light skinned black woman from Harlem. She runs into a childhood friend who is also a light skinned black woman. But this friend, named Claire, passes of as white in society by hiding her appearance to seem white. Claire has blond hair and is married to a white man who has no clue of her racial background and thinks she is white. I think this film explores the logic behind society’s concept of race and racial identity. A black woman who is mixed passing of as white with sort of shows how ridiculous and senseless the concept of race really is. The film is also in black and white and I think this was done to represent the theme of racial identity in the film.
