I agree that the film does silence the thoughts of Irene and Clare. In the novel, we get to hear Irene’s thoughts and it does add another element to Irene’s character. Irene stares at Clare and the reader hears Irene’s thoughts as she stares before their first encounter. The novel gives more detail. More for the reader to digest.
