I have to start my hot take by saying Tessa Thompson (Irene) and Ruth Negga (Clare) were simply amazing, and I believe they both beautifully embodied their characters in the film. This film is about two mixed-race childhood friend who reunites while ironically, passing for white to shop in a whites-only store. They both used their lighter-skinned to help themselves the main difference was the extent they used their “privilege”. I found it interesting to see how much Clare missed her “colored” roots, despite choosing at an early age to disguise herself as a white woman and hide her blackness to live a “better” more well-off life. There is only one aspect of the character dynamic I didn’t understand. Why didn’t Irene want to help Clare integrate back into her community who clearly missed and wanted to rejoin?
