A lot of our community service project was suggested by Mohammad because he has already participated in the Village Community Boathouse.  I learned to talk with him about the Non-profit we are interested and he provided me with a lot of valuable information which makes me feel comfortable about the outcome of our upcoming presentation.  We also conversed with Sam about our project and she was very helpful in our construction of our presentation and decision about if the Village Community Boathouse is the right place to volunteer.

I have walked around the Starr center and found many interesting pamphlets which inform me about job opportunities.  The one I found most helpful was a pamphlet on Actuary Science.  I’ve also used the Library databases to my advantage in English and Business class and they have many valuable, reliable resources which I can make use of in my future classes.

I have joined a student club, a club called Fusion.  It is a primarily Filipino club, but racism is a thing of the past and I am welcomed as a non-Filipino.  There are very nice people in this club and I am always brightened up when one of my fellow club-mates waves hello or asks how I’m doing in the halls.  🙂

As a result of the community service project, I have come to realize the importance of it and how community service accounts for many institutions we would likely not have if not for the good will of society.  The Village Community Boathouse for example is entirely dependent on volunteers to provide free services to anyone who desires them.

Non-profit organizations are important because they certain things are not meant to be labeled with a price, things like human connections which money shouldn’t be involved with.

In the next 3 years I see myself getting involved with a non-profit, maybe the Village Community Boathouse if I enjoy my experience as a volunteer there.  I’d also like to boost my grades now that I am assimilating to the New York community and growing more comfortable with it.

My role as a Baruch Scholar is to be giving back what I have received from the college.  A full tuition scholarship is a privilege and I am very lucky to have gotten it.  I know many people from my high school in Pennsylvania who are paying tens of thousands of dollars each year for tuition whereas I am paying practically nothing.

Since I have been granted such a privilege, I have also been granted the responsibility that comes with this privilege.  There was assuredly a lot involved with my obtaining of this scholarship; to make somebody’s college tuition entirely free, many donors have been involved.

I feel it is very important to reimburse these donors’ grants through acts of charity to the New York society.  If I am financially stable I will, in addition to volunteering within the community, donate back to Baruch College.  I feel strongly about doing this because I know my money will be well-spent on kids like me who have an interest in education but don’t want to spend thousands of dollars.

The culture of service which requires Baruch students is somewhat unnecessary in my point of view; I think filing paperwork really takes away from the volunteer experience of helping people out.  On the other hand, I understand many people need the spark of the culture of service project to start them off on volunteering and giving back to the community.   I look forward to volunteering in the future, for this project, and for fulfilling my desire to help fellow Americans in my free time; this project is a step to take to know where the right place to volunteer is for me and, although I hate filling out paperwork, it will be a good introduction.

I’ve been through a lot in life, and what I am most proud of is my patience.  Back when I was a little boy, I used to throw very violent tantrums at my immediate family on a nearly daily basis – everything that didn’t go my way made me very angry.  One day, however, I asked myself “Why are these little things such a big deal to me?” There was no good answer in my mind for this question.  Since then, I’ve never lost my patience with anything and thrown unnecessary fits from the climaxes of emotions I used to fail to control.  I believe patience is a very necessary thing, and, with today’s technology we should in theory have plenty of time (seeing as the pilgrims had some free time without much technology) so we have no great reason to grow impatient and be in a hurry, some people need to calm down!

As a college student I expect to gain the knowledge and skills to acquire a job which will be enjoyable for me.  This is all I really expect from college, it is the sole reason I am attending, however, I’m sure many other things will come of it: friends, connections, and excitment).

I expect it to have less consistent assignments than high school, but when we do get work to do, it will be more lengthy, analytical, and will require more thought.

I hope my first semester will bring me many experiences which will assist me through the rest of college and I am moderately concerned with maintaining a GPA which will satisfy me.
