  1. 4) The purpose of this image is to show the divide and brutality that these protests bring. This is to show how police force is used even in the means of peaceful protest, no matter what the protesters intentions were. The purpose of this photograph would be used to expose police force intentions of hurting citizens by taking away their right to protest which is a basic right given to us by the Constitution. The aggression can also be seen by their formal attire, as the woman is dressed up going out and the police officers are in full riot gear ready to take her down.

    7) Ethos, pathos and logos is developed by this image. The message being carried across is that there seems to be an inequality in society as white males are going up to cuff a by standing mixed race woman. This emotion would exert anger to some audience members of particular mixed color as acts of aggression towards their race would seem as targeted and in this instance at a seemingly peaceful protester. There is a claim in this image that as in the caption “Black Lives Matter” this movement has provoked even more aggression as a movement to promote mixed races relations with police force brutality seems to be summed up in this photo. A viewer would have to have the values and beliefs of that all colors are equal in society, as this photo shows how a mixed race woman is being taken down simply for standing up for what is their right and beliefs. The audience member would therefore show discontent with this photo as the source of the movement is causing it to be worsened.

8)Having seen this image and being familiar with the movement at it’s time during 2017 makes me feel an emotion of appeal and discomfort against the officers actions. Yes, through all protests there is eventual violence from both sides and rioting which causes police efforts to damage control and clear the streets. However all protests are protected under free speech given to us under the Constitution and all citizens are entitled to exercise this. This photo shows that the mixed-race woman is in no means in attire for violence, dressing up for seeming going out for a party and standing in the middle of the road to being handcuffed by white male officers who are in full riot gear prepared for battle. I do believe in equality in society as race should not be the factor of how we are treated, as shown as a collectives we have tackled wars and revolutions in order to become a free country, so why can’t we be one? It is understood many are brought under different norms growing up and taught by older individuals however these social norms are not welcomed in this day and age as we all should be equal.

  2. 4. The purpose of this image is to show how much strength the police force will go to to stop something they dont necessarily care for. This image was probably taken by an passerby and was used many times again for the Black Lives Matter movement.

    7. All of the Aristotelian elements are used in this picture. Logos are used to appeal to the audience for the Black Lives Matter movement. Pathos is used when you see how nervous the woman looks, and how intimidating the white police men look, not caring about her. It makes you feel for the woman pictured. And Ethos is used for everyone who is pro Black Lives Matter. The woman in the picture looks scared and innocent. She should not have to be arrested for standing up in what she believes in, and thats what the message conveys— to continue being strong and never give up. A viewer would have to be strong willed and want equal rights for all in order to be affected by this image.

    8. This image makes me feel sad. It is heart breaking to me that just two years ago this picture was taken, and not much has changed. We’re in 2019, all should be treated equal and there should never be a gang of police men targeting someone for what they believe is right.

  3. 4. I think the approach of the picture is to show the difference in motives the two perspectives have. On one side, you have the black women walking alone and unarmed exemplifying peace. On the other side, you see a group of heavily armed men who seem prepared for war rather than a peaceful protest. I think people have used this picture to prove the difference in nature that these two kinds of groups have especially during that movement.

    7. Mostly Pathos and Ethos can help you read this image. For example, pathos can be used to encourage anger when you see how aggressively the police act towards an unarmed black woman walking up to them. It can also promote fear of what they might do next. Ethos is being used to appeal to the audience of people monitoring the black lives matter movement. I think an argument made from this picture can be over which “side” is really the most disruptive and defensive. Seeing as the police are the ones carrying more guns and shields while the woman is walking calm and vulnerable towards them. The viewer would obviously have to be educated on the movement and realize the true intentions behind the protests.

    8. The image mostly makes me frustrated. This picture shows how strong and powerful this woman is to have the guts and confidence to walk up to them. Except, it also shows how vulnerable she is, unarmed walking up to a group of heavy shielded men carrying guns. I think the contrast in motives is pretty obvious and the fact that many people manage to misinterpret it is frustrating.

  4. 4) The image represents the black lives matter movement, which is a big movement in America. Since cops are allowed to have guns thanks to the second amendment of the Constitution, the black community want to stop police brutality of innocent black people. The main thing that is represented in this photo is that the women is using the Ghandi technique (nonviolence) against polices with guns and armor to show that the African Americans are harmless and police are abusing their authority and power to damage innocent lives within the community.
    7) All pathos, logos, and ethos revolve around this picture. Pathos is used to build emotions between this photo and the audience to see the challenge that the community faces from the police. It gives off a sad feeling and a brave feeling since it’s 2019 and we are still dealing with racism but the community is standing up against injustice. Logos is obviously used in this photo because it’s basic sense to stop police brutality because it’s not right. Killing a person or a group based on their ethnicity is considered hate crime and it’s obviously not right because it’s a law in the United States to not go against anyone because of their background. At the end of the day we are all human, color is just a factor in humanity. What makes us human is how we all live in this world to have a family and a good life. Someone else shouldn’t deserve to take over someone else’s life because it’s not reasonable. Lastly, Ethos is used in this photo to convince it’s audience that nonviolence and the lives of people matter more than anything else in the world. The author is also convincing it’s audience that police don’t have the right to fight this woman because she is harmless, she just wants peace and stability between both sides.
    8) This image makes me feel disappointed in our society since we all have common sense but these incidents show that we humans are easily fooled by the belief of racism. Like we all have sense of what’s right and wrong. We know that we are all human beings with one goal in life and that is to live on a successful path and die peacefully. It’s stupid how humans are dying in the hands of other humans because everyone has their own opinion for something. Also, it’s valid enough to say that we don’t need guns anymore because we aren’t living in the past tense anymore. At this point I feel that the second amendment is being abused by police because they are allowed to have guns. But it doesn’t make sense that cops are allowed to shoot or arrest a person for having a gun. We should abolish the second amendment not because it’s what liberals want but it’s because it makes sense. But the problem is that there are businesses, especially the NRA, who import and export guns for profit. To sum this mess all up, we should get rid of the second amendment and the NRA to solve this gun issue in America.

  5. 4. I think the purpose of this image is to not just tell a story but show a story. The photo was taken at a Black Lives Matter protest in LA, and shows a young woman, presumed to be a peaceful protestor, being handcuffed by cops while she stays calm and still. The fact that she remains calm says a lot because there are three cops surrounding her, fully geared, which can conclude this was expected to happen and she was prepared, making the image all the more powerful. The image has most likely been used in Black Lives Matter propaganda and to spread awareness on social media.
    7. I believe pathos plays the biggest role in understanding this image, alongside with ethos and then logos. This image strikes an emotional response because the woman was just standing up for the thousands of innocent black people’s lives who had been lost due to police brutality and racial prejudices, yet she is the one getting in trouble. The argument being made in this image is that police brutality and racial discrimination is not one to be accepted. She is using her constitutional right to peacefully protest, yet she is getting sent off the premises handcuffed, which is unacceptable. Ethos is used to target an audience which in this case is Black Lives Matter supporters. Logos is used here to logically understand and breakdown the image that handcuffing a peaceful protestor is uncalled for. The viewer would most likely have to be either a neutral supporter or a Black Lives Supporter to be persuaded by the image.
    8. This image makes me feel frustrated and utterly disappointed in the society we live in today. It is beyond unreasonable for racist outbreaks to still happen presently. Although we’ve progressed as a society it’s events and images like these that remind us there’s still such a long way to go before all humans are truly teated equally and with respect. If the circumstances were changed, and this was a predominately white protest for pro-guns for instance, I am almost certain it would not have the same outcome if the protestors were peaceful. I do not think the policemen would choose a woman from the crowd, and publicly belittle her for using her constitutional rights like they did with the woman photographed.

  6. 4) I believe the purpose of this image is to show the power and cruelty of the police force. I believe this picture is used in a variety of different ways possibly to defend both sides or make it seem a lot worst than it looks by putting the colored woman at fault for whatever this situation entails.
    7) The ethos is what particular comes to mind with this picture because it depicts a racial issue appealing to the ethics of the people looking at it. The argument that can be said for this picture would most likely be that the colored woman was just walking doing nothing that is wrong but is being aggressively stopped by the police force with an army behind them. The evidence of this would be the police with their gun trying to stop the colored woman with no other context except that this is for black lives matter. To believe this they would have to believe in the black lives matter point of view or just be a person who believes in racial equality.
    8) This image just has me feel bored mostly because this isn’t anything new this type of serious thing has been happening for years and just doesn’t faze me as much as it used to yes I care about what is happening but seeing these pictures just makes it seem like a common thing that doesn’t seem as important as it should be.

  7. 4. This image serves the purpose of conveying a very violent side of stopping a cause and also a very peaceful approach at trying to get change. People most likely used this image in the favor of the Black Lives Matter movement in order to try and show that the cops are violent tyrants ready to put any uprising down but peace overcomes that.

    7. Ethos, pathos, and logos did help me read the image. I appealed to pathos when viewing the unarmed woman faced against many armored officers with the thoughts of what could go wrong going through my head. Ethos made me think of the morality of the situation and logos made me think if it was reasonable or not. I do not believe there is a direct argument to be made from the image. A viewer would need to have values based on peace in order to be moved by the image .

    8. This image makes me feel hopeful for peace being able to overcome aggressive tactics. I get this feeling mainly because the police seem to be standing down to the unarmed, peaceful woman.

  8. 4. I think that the purpose of this image serves to indicate the barrier between two specific groups in America and show the division between peaceful protest and armed retaliation tactics. It is clear that this colored woman is facing several armed men on her own in attempt to exercise her right to protest peacefully, when on the other hand, the police force seems to be putting her in handcuffs. The police force is attempting to further segregate certain Americans from others and putting a woman through what seems to look like shame in front of many people, simply for trying to act upon the freedoms that this country has given her. The purpose of this image is to show the corrupt side of division and racial separation that America still endures to this day.

    7. All rhetorical conventions can be identified in this photo, however I really do believe that Ethos shines through the most. By definition, ethos calls upon ethics or values. Is it really “ethically correct” to be handcuffing this woman for simply exercising her rights and protesting in a peaceful manner? Are other issues related to police brutality overall, “ethical”? The value factor of ethos comes into play as well because America is a country that preaches upon rights of peaceful protest, expression, and a democracy where people have a voice. These values that have been instilled in our lives from our very Founding Fathers are being completely ignored by our society and aren’t demonstrated in the slightest bit by this photo. Not only are those values not demonstrated, but they are being ignored completely in this particular situation.

    8. This image makes me feel uneasy because it was taken in 2017. I feel as if this is something we would find in a newspaper over 100 years ago because the police force is looking at the woman as if she is less human than them. Something like that should not be happening, ESPECIALLY not in a modernized country that revolves around equality and freedom of expression.

  9. 4. I think this picture only surved one purpose. That was to portray police brutality on a young woman who appears to be infront of military style police. It’s too portray the police in a bad light. It could have been used to push for more eyes on police and to continue the fight on police brutality.
    7. The elements of rhetoric did help as I thought why was she there? The argument to be made is police are overreacting to a peaceful protestor. You can clearly see two heavily armed men cuff one woman. You have to believe that police in America are more aggressive to people of color, especially African Americans.
    8. It doesn’t make me feel anything. I don’t understand fully what’s going on. Did the police tell her to leave the area but she knowingly stay there? I don’t really connect to her, I personally wouldn’t find myself in her position. No way.

  10. 4. The purpose of this image is to portray the police brutality against African Americans. The picture is showing a very calm black woman and a mob of white police officers who are looking to come at this woman. I believe this picture has been taken and used for the Black Lives Matter movement.

    7. While examining this picture I definitely thought of ethos and pathos. Ethos is showed because this image connects with a certain groups. Pathos is being shown because this picture is for people to see the harsh and unnecessary behavior towards this woman. In order to be persuaded by the claim a person has to believe in racial equality.

    8. This image makes me feel very disturbed. First being, this is a woman who is staying calm and not doing anything, meanwhile a bunch of men with weapons are basically attacking her. Another reason why this is disturbing is because, there is racism going on. It is very clear that these men are acting this way towards one woman just because of the color of her skin. Police brutality and racism needs to be stopped, because everybody is equal no matter where they come from or who they are.

  11. 4) I think the image is presented to show society how a certain race is being treated even in a peaceful protest. We see how the young woman is approached by two white male police officers in full riot gear when in the image she presents no threat. The photographer captures the innocence of young woman. I believe activist groups would use this to their advantage due to the fact that it would present their organization in a light of harmony and peace even when they have points to protest. While officials are presented as aggressive and very quick minded. We see them approach her but their feet show that they had ran over to her. When someone runs its because they sense fear or harm and this young woman is depicted as the complete opposite.
    7) Once again it appeals to ethos and logos because the picture clearly shows how the young woman is no threat. She is depicted as peaceful while, the officials who ran over to her seem to have concern, that she might be danger or harm to them or others. Ethos because as women we appeal to what she might of felt when she was approached by officials in riot gear. We feel for her and what might or could have happened to her after the image was captured. As a viewer myself I have seen police brutality against a specific rate so the officials reaction is no surprise however it further feeds my conception and perspective I hold of authorities in the U.S.
8)I feel for her not because it can necessarily happen to me because it can happen to anyone but you start to see where authorities stand and how they view us. Which evidently leads me to have a negative opinion of them and how I should behave in the street. My peace can be misinterpreted as a threat to an official and it really makes me question what type of world we live in. Should our skin color define how much of a threat we pose to society.

  12. 4) I think the purpose of this image is to illustrate unnecessary force that usually takes place in protests. This image seems to show a non-white woman being stopped by heavily armored officers that have handcuffs ready. The woman doesn’t have any armor on, unlike the two white officers who are stopping her, but rather she has a simple summer time dress on. It could just be bad timing the picture was taken nonetheless, one of the officers seem to have a tackle like position ready. This image has probably been used by other people to give a strong visual depiction of unnecessary force that usually takes place in protests by officers to make arguments on the news or in general how officers can overstep their roles at times.
    7) When I first saw this image, pathos came into my mind because the woman seems to be casually Infront of the officers while the officers who are wearing riot gear have a threatened /tackle like posture and have cuffs ready. I believe the claim that is being made in this image is officers sometimes show too much unnecessary action/force. I believe this since, even behind the officers there’s still probably over a dozen more officers so there is no need for the front two officers to get all defensive against a woman who has a mere dress on. I felt a sense of sadness seeing this image because it’s a protest and the woman is being treated like she’s a huge threat to armored officers. Which saddens me more is if the officers arrest her, she won’t even be able to do the protest, denying her the freedom to peacefully protest. The values the reader would have to believe in order to be persuaded by the claim is that racism still exists because its two armored white officers who are treating a non-white woman as if she’s a risk even though she doesn’t seem to have anything on her that’s dangerous.
    8) The image makes me feel disgusted and neutral. Firstly, it makes me feel disgusted because it’s a black lives matter protest and the cops seem a little too defensive against a non-white woman who could just be simply trying to talk to them. Thus, I also feel the feeling of just being neutral on the case because it is just one picture. A picture can sometimes be taken the wrong way at times and at the end of the day a picture is what you perceive it to be unless your told otherwise.

  13. 4.The woman looks calm, yet standing firmly, as she seems to be peacefully protesting. The police across from her are fully armed and look as if they are in a violent war. I believe the purpose of this image is to show that even in a non-violent protest, America is ready to attack a race that has done nothing but stand firmly and try to be heard.
    7. This image appeals to ethos the most because it seems as if it is unfair and morally unjust to be handcuffing a woman who is clearly not a violent person and has not been acting aggressive towards them.
8.This image makes me sympathize with the woman who has clearly done nothing wrong. If somebody wants to silently protest and is not harming or threatening anybody then they should be able to without having the police stop them. She clearly does not have the intent of harming anyone so it is not right. This looks like police brutality to me.

  14. 4) The purpose of the image is to show how exaggerated the police are. I think that the image has been used repeatedly to show the same idea and spread it across the country and even the world.
    7) The element of pathos helps me read the image in that I can feel the tension and seriousness of the situation through the picture. Logos also comes into play a little in that it makes no sense for an army of riot ready police officers are needed to arrest one person who it not committing any violent acts in the photograph. A claim could be that the police go to extremes for small peaceful protest, and that in conclusion there needs to be a revising in protocol as well as how to analyze a situation. The viewer may be moved to feel bad or get angry depending on their values toward the Black Lives Matter movement.
    8) This image annoys me because it is something that I find so common on social media in the news, something that does not get better. A here we go again. It also reminds me that not only does our society have some serious turmoil but that no one is really exempt from it including me.

  15. 1. The purpose of the image is to create a statement for those who support the Black Lives Matter movement and protests, in which there will always be people who oppose the unfair treatment of African Americans in America. The fact that it is just one woman, dressed very casually and unfit for protesting, standing there staring straight and standing confidently, is what makes the image so powerful. When some people think protests, they think a angry mob fighting and waving signs, screaming and marching forward against a army of police dressed in riot gear, and in this case only half of that is true. There is what appears to be a whole army of officers dressed from head to toe in riot gear, but there are no angry protesters making a loud and violent scene, and no signs waving in sight. Instead, the photographer and the woman shown wanted to create the image to be inspiring, which is evident in the way the woman is standing, as the lone protester against an army, tall and confident in what she is doing. I think the image has been used in advertisements for the Black Lives Matter community, providing clear evidence that there still are and always will be people who support the movement.
    7. The Aristotelian element of pathos helps me read the image in the sense that it brings out the inspirational message behind it, which in my opinion is a one of the main purposes of the image is- to inspire. Pathos, as defined in the book, is how the writer uses emotion to move or persuade an audience. In this case, there is nothing written, but instead just a picture that speaks a thousand words and of those words many of them appeal to the emotions of those who follow the Black Lives Matter movement, or just agree with their views and are passionate about them. These are the values that a viewer would of the image would have to believe in order to be persuaded or moved by the image, that Black Lives Matter.
    8. I can’t say the image makes me feel extremely emotional, but I definitely feel like the police are using unnecessary force on the woman shown because she is just standing there peacefully, completely harmless to anyone. She poses no threat to them and there is not need for her to be handcuffed, whether it be by plastic handcuffs or not. Also, is it really necessary to have two grown police officers, dressed in full riot gear, handcuff one woman? The simple answer is no.

  16. 4. I think the purpose of this image is to showcase how people of color were treated when they tried to stand up for themselves and protests the injustices being done to their community. We don’t have much information, background, or context for this image and for that reason it is very easy to make assumptions about it and what happened before and after it was taken. After all, we only have the picture to go off of so anyone on any side of the spectrum can use it to support their claims and biases.

    7. I find that when it comes to an image like this, the only one of the aristotelian are ever directly used and that’s pathos. Different people will take their emotions into account and use them to give a narrative to a photo that may not inherently be what the photographer was going for. The main way to tell that pathos is used within this photo is that they try to show as little protesters as possible in an attempt to make it seem as if she was surrounded for being black(implied). When a picture is as vague as this emotion is the only thing reliable to the photographer to get his point across while still retaining a slight nuance to it.

    8. Truthfully, the image made me feel nothing for the reason being that I don’t like to make assumptions about anyone or anything without knowing the real story. This sort of thing, in my opinion is what causes much of the polarization in the United States. The constant misinformation from both sides on issues that should be non partisan, but aren’t .This is also the reason i tend to stay out of politics and keep with my ideals. As of now, I have no opinion on this image, but if I could at least get context to the situation I would feel much more compelled to take a stance.

  17. 4.The purpose of this image is to dismantle the stigma of violence in the Black Lives Matter Movement. Here we observe three white male officers dressed in riot gear handcuffing a non-white woman in a dress and flats. While the officers seem to be aggressive and using an unnecessary amount of force to restrain the protester, her face holds a calm demeanor. Proving, that not all protests have to be negatively focus, peaceful protesting is what the movement is attempting to promote.
    7. The Aristotelian element of pathos helps me unveil other thoughts I can possibly have on the image. Obviously the photo is meant to have some effect on the viewers whether positive or negative.Personally the picture makes me think of the context of this event. Why is this protest happening? Did something spark this moment previous to this picture being taken? Who took the picture? Why is she being handcuffed? All stem from the element of pathos in the picture.A claim that could be made is that police brutality is targeted at a specific race and is supported by the intense response (riot gear and handcuffing) police officers took in a majority Black movement known to bring awareness to police brutality against the black community.
    8. I usually have a response to seeing images like this but this one in particular did not draw out a significant emotional response from me. It makes me visualize similar pictures and events in the Civil Rights Movement and I know that this is history repeating itself, or so it seems. I also believe that every action has a reaction so I wonder, what happened previous to the photo that made this encounter happen? There’s always multiple sides to a story and the only one I know is the one that I interpreted.

  18. 4. The purpose of this image is to show extreme police can be when it comes to dealing with people of color. In the caption you can see it was clearly captured for the sake of Black Lives Matter so in this case it is being used to also show racial injustice. I believe other people may have used the photo to prove that police officers are way to aggressive and they have no regard whether you are a male or female.

    7. In this picture I believe pathos and logos. The fact that any group of people have to undergo this, especially in this case a women should already trigger some kind of emotional reaction. I believes ethos plays a part as well because as sad as this is it is what actually happens.

    8. I don’t think this image irritates me more than any of the other ones I have seen. At this point I think there needs to be change because there are way too many pictures like this out there. In this picture you see a women who appears to be doing nothing (as you do in most) being handcuffed by police. I think that at this point enough is enough.

  19. 4) Originally I believe this image was used to document a black lives matter protest, however I think since the photo has been taken it has been used to show the injustice within the police system. Since it shows two cops in riot gear charging an unarmed woman.

    7) This image surely has elements of pathos because the juxtaposition of the woman standing there unarmed and the two cops charging towards her makes a sharp image taht plays to the emotion of the observer. The image is an argument, it makes an ethical appeal by showing an example of the police force exerting more force than necessary and it makes the viewer question if such use of force is justified. To be persuaded by the claim the reader must believe it’s wrong for the police to use more force than necessary.

    8. The image didn’t draw an immediate emotional response from me. Probably because I’ve become desensitized from all the similiar images I’ve seen. However it does make me remember all the similiar examples of things like this happening and reminds me the way the police force acts needs to change.
