Response to “The Language of New Media,” by Lev Manovich

With the advancement of technology throughout time comes the increase in innovation in art and many other aspects of life. The possibilities in creating art have become limitless with new media. It has become easier to disperse information and manipulate media with modern computers as well as the internet. Before the development of new media, pieces of art or writing were fixed in one place, and were not capable of being altered back and forth easily. Work was created, and duplicated in its original form only. Nowadays, new media is defined as media that can exist in many different variations. Manovich writes, “A new media object is not something fixed once and for all, but something that can exist in different, potentially infinite versions” (36). New media art takes previously existing media, and makes it new by altering it in a number of different ways. In class, we have learned to use Photoshop to manipulate images and put them together in any way that we choose. This does leave an infinite number of possibilities for the outcome of our work. There are so many sources which can be turned into art, and many ways in which something can be made your own.

New media arts is a pretty accessible form of art. When we take images or text that we find and alter them to better suit our purpose, something new and original is created. With the number of photo editing applications available today, many people are creating their own form of new media art without even knowing it!
