The use of digital technology as a tool in art has increased with the growing presence of technology in multiple areas of people’s lives. Digital technology has made the manipulation of images easier than it ever has been before, and has made possible an infinite number of ways to make an image unique. Now that so many people have access to photo editing software, the field of new media arts is open to a greater variety of people. This leads to an increase in unique art created using this technology as a tool.
With the advancement in technology, it is possible for people to create a sort of alternative reality created through the digital manipulation of images. The author writes, “The fact that the digital medium allows for a seamless reconstruction and manipulation of reality seems to have a heightened an awareness of the questionable nature of the authenticity of all images” (36). It has become more difficult to determine whether an image has been manipulated or not, due to the capabilities of altering items to an extent while still making them look realistic. This has lead to issues concerning to the creation of standards in our society. For example, the use of Photoshop and other editing software in advertisements to make things look more appealing to consumers has consequentially created unrealistic beauty standards of the human body. The use of digital technology to create an alternative reality definitely has its benefits in the art world, however when these unrealistic yet realistic looking images are perpetuated into our everyday lives, they may become problematic.
