My Next Steps

The overall community service project has been an interesting experience.  The resources that were used for this project was not new to me as I had a similar project in high school.  I have tried to utilize other resources like the writing center.  The problem was that it was fully booked which discouraged me.  So instead I sent my paper to my professor which really helped with the essay.  I’ve also have used other resources like the Wasserman trading floor for the business project that I have.

These resources certainly helped with my project but I wouldn’t say it gave me an edge.  The reason that I say that is because anyone can access those resources so there is really no edge to be gained.  It is up to the person to not slack and to use the resources around them.  I would say that these resources are certainly important to my education as I admit that my writing is not the best.  I have known that and I can only try to make it better.  The writing center is a place that I will try to visit often.  Also the trading floor is also certainly important as Baruch is a business school.  So it is obvious to use the trading floor for future projects and assignments.

The project has not really changed my understanding of community service.  I have always believed that there is never too little time to help out the less fortunate.  Even if it is for a few hours you are still making a difference.  It was just a reminder that I should make time for community service even if the work that Baruch does give me is a large amount.

One of the things I have found in Baruch was the Baruch Japan Club.  It is certainly an interesting class as the Japanese culture is a very vast culture.  The club has may have given me the idea to take a Japanese class in the future.  It certainly would be helpful as knowing more languages is never a handicap.

What is my role?

To tell the truth I have no idea of what my role is.  So far I am just a student studying toward toward my goal which is graduation.  I have joined some clubs that have interested me like the Japan culture club.  Joining the club is something new for me.  They have Japanese conversation classes that have piqued my interest in the language. I am a freshman, a person in a new world trying to find his way.  The journey of college is an unsure one.  Questions like should I change my major or should i start this club will come up.

If I have to give an idea of a role I am playing now is that i should be like a sponge.  I should try to soak all the information I can and keep expanding my knowledge.  Once I have taken in all the knowledge I can I will try to make a choice of what to do.  Hopefully my future will involve me becoming a leader and an innovator.  Hopefully I am known for something, infamous for an achievement or action I have made.  My role should be to better my community and to help anyone that needs it.

This is closely related to what Baruch promotes.  Our college wants all of its students to be able to have the knowledge to change the world.  If we change our minds in the future we should be provided with the vast knowledge to be able to switch majors or interests on a whim.  Baruch wants us to make an impact on the world.

A new leaf

Hello, my name is Michael Chin.  I can be described as a relaxed and laid back person.  I try not to stress my self out when problems occur and always keep a cool head in pressure situations.  I love food and also love to play handball.  One experience or recurring experience that shaped who I am is the camping trip I always go on every year.  I go with my father and his friends up to the Adirondacks and camp at Saranac Lake since I was 5.  The experience is enlightening in a way as I am away from technology.  I have no TV to stare at or computer to use.  I get to experience nature the way it should be.  Almost every night has a sky filled with stars and is illuminated by the moonlight alone.  The many years that I have been camping for makes me appreciate what I have.  I try not to bicker or fuss when I’m frustrated.  I  just try to look at situations from a different perspective and try to solve a problem in an unorthodox way.  Going camping has made me resourceful because when I am in the Adirondacks I have to cut my own wood, start my own fire, and pitch my own tent.  I just try to do what I have to do to succeed in life.

I know it is cliche but starting college is really like turning over a new life for me.  A good example would be the question many people ask another as freshman, where did you go to school for high school.  I would sadly answer University Neighborhood High School.  It is pretty much a fact that no one knows where this school is or what it is.  I would always answer a school in the lower east side then almost everyone answers with Oh and then goes silent.  Lets just say I am embarrassed about my school and could be described by this.  Yes, that is my school in the video and the student mentioned in the video was not just stabbed but stabbed in the butt from his bestfriend.  That was the kind of school I went too but it was not always that bad.  It wasn’t great but I still met good people there.  Sadly over the summer I had a falling out with my friends many of which go to BMCC.

What i expect from college is to meet new people and to learn new things.  I expect to be challenged and for my mind to be stretched.  I know my workload with significantly be increased from high school but, I am okay with that.  It is time for me to start a new part of my life and to take that step I need to take for the future.
