Mispercpetions & Social Constructs

Race Is Contingent Upon Racism

According to Bonilla Silva a well known sociologist he states his definition of Racism in which is “What is racism for most people, the answer to this question is very simple. Racism is prejudice, ignorance, or a disease that afflicts some individuals and causes them to discriminate against others just because of the way they look”.

Marxist position on race is simple and straight forward: Racism is an ideology used to bourgeoisie to divide people.

“A legitimating ideology for an exploitative structure. Racist ideology propagated in the media, educational system, and other institutions, together with the actual distribution of relative petty advantage within the working class, serves to disorganize the entire working class including the ethnic majority, thereby allowing capital to more effectively exploit most majority group workers.”

Race As A Social Construct

Race is a social construct that deals with real life consequences and it is based upon physical features.

“Who Invented the Concept of Race”  by Robert Bernasconi who is a philosopher mentions how this invention of the concept of race took place sometime after the introduction of the broad division of peoples on the basis of color, nationality, and other inherited characteristics that could not be overcome subsequently, as such as a religious difference in which it could be overcome by conversion. And In fact, this is very true no one choses to be born any skin color or into his family’s nationality.

Personally feel that we shouldn’t be categorized in these aspects we are all equal no matter what and all have the same capabilities  to do an accomplish anything we want.

Socially Constructed Society

As stated in my previous assignments, we live in a world in which is made up of social constructs at least in my opinion. What i mean by this is that literally everything is what society makes of it. Today’s society is filled with differences in the way you think, interpret, analyze, and the way you go about things. Social constructs are used to uncover the ways in which individuals and groups participate in the creation of their perceived social reality. it involves looking at the ways social phenomena are created, institutionalized, and made into tradition by humans. A social constructed reality is one that is seen as an ongoing, dynamic process that is reproduced by people acting on their interpretation and their knowledge of it.

And in today’s world our identities all come down to society and how they view and perceive us. Yeah we all may have this idea of how we want to be perceived but of course the way we perceive ourselves isn’t going to be the way everyone else in this society looks at you.
