Through lines 548-557 Desdemona’s father Brabantiois being told by the Duke to forgive his daughter and Othello for marrying each other behind his back. Due to different social standings, Brabantio does not approve of the relationship because Othello is a moor. The “griefs” and “remedies” that the Duke mentions in the passage indicate Brabantios feelings towards his daughter and Othello’s relationship. Brabantio does not approve of Desdemona and Othello’s relationship, the Duke urges Brabantio to move on with the following advice: “To mourn a mischief that is past and gone, Is the next way to draw new mischief on.”(Lines: 553-554). This means that Brabantio should not take action against his daughter’s new marriage because if he does it will cause more issues. The Duke says this because he wants Brabantio to have no have no hard feelings with Othello and Desdemona. The Duke believes that Brabantio cannot change the incidence since it has already occurred and believes that it would be pointless to fight against them. Although this passage is directed towards Brabantio, I feel like it is significant to the entire book. This passage indicates that wasting time on the past is useless and that people should accept fate and move o. The Duke seems to know what Brabantio is going through, we can conclude that the Duke may have gone through similar issues in his past and that has made him wiser. The Duke could also be foreshadowing occurring complications throughout the book. This passage could possibly lead to many future issues due to a relationship that was not allowed.
