Photo Essay Pitch

Summary

Baruch College Cross Country is a team that tends to be overlooked. With the pandemic calming down, I want to look at how being shut down for two years affected recruitment for this specific sport. Another thing I wanted to look at was how the transition from virtual to in person was last year and if it was a challenge last season.

Being off for two years then coming back right away with no pre season as a fall sport, sounds complicated, but the Bearcats finished strong. The men's team finished second in the CUNYAC tournament, history's best, and the women finished fourth.

My focus for this photo essay would be on Head Coach, Angeoline Piguave-Cowan, and how despite the two years off from the pandemic, how she kept her team together. The numbers last year started low, but now the Bearcats have one of the biggest teams that they have seen in a while. I want to find out what she did to recruit, how she kept her team together over the pandemic, what she is looking forward to most this season, and a day in the life of her as a coach. This is a timely topic because the cross country season is starting now and their first meet will be this upcoming Saturday.

This photo essay I would attend practices, meets and try to get behind the scenes pictures of her outside of coaching and her other responsibilities. As a coach at Baruch College, it takes grit and hard work, most do not do it for the money, they do it for passion. I want to cover her as my subject and find out more about what it takes to be a collegiate coach at a public division three school.
