Brian: I started playing during the late 90s but professionally, I started during the early 2000s, fighting games were at their peak during and every weekend there was a tournament in my local arcade. During that You couldn't survive off of a prize pool at your local arcade and at local tournaments, the lowest was like 100 dollars for 1st place on a good occasion. During my time, the prizes of a midsize tournament were often relegated to being allow to compete in bigger tournaments sometimes even international. You have to pay to play and you have to pay for your own expenses, often those tournaments merely or any compensation.
