Jacqueline Cabrera: Final project proposal

A focus on the rise and circumstances around the MTA Fare and how this affects college students. In recent events, there has been a rise in fare evasion enforcement, but as well as violent tactics being used by NYPD Officers. My video would focus on how college students not having metro fare covered can be a hardship that can stop them from coming to school. I plan to focus on the stories of baruch students in particular and explain why CUNY students should get metrocards paid for, and show how this can affect the future. I plan to Interview a police officer, Interview local gov official, Baruch students, and Interview Baruch administration for comments. But this is mostly on a psa type style to show how a change needs to be made.

Radio Pitch

Pitch 1

My neighborhood has a volleyball field that has shaken up the whole area. They have been around since I can remember, my father, being an active customer in their field since I was born. But the difference is they are in a residential home’s backyard. The owner has transformed it into a successful business, local hangout spot and has been an innovator in the sports business. They play Ecuavolley, which is a form of volleyball played in Ecuador(different rules, the net is placed at a greater height). The owner is an Ecuadorian born citizen and has spent the last 15 years making it an attraction. They hold tournaments, betting, gambling, as well as having formed their own league. I plan to ask her how she has made all of this success possible, any downsides to the business and how she feels is impacting the neighborhood itself, as well as the participants in these games and their families. I think the Ambi could be the men playing, the food being cooked and the chants of the crowd, you can always hear them from down the block on a Saturday afternoon. I would like to focus my projects for this class in my neighborhood and feel this establishment has made big strides in pushing our community in a progressive direction and is a key feature.

Pitch 2

I am a huge fan of street food and my area has so many varieties at all times of the day. It’s sad to say they all know me and even my dog on a first-name basis because I always eat out. But although the food mainly caters to Hispanic and Asian food, I have recently begun to notice a change in my neighborhood which leads me to believe that my neighborhood is going to be going through gentrification. I would like to sit down with some of my favorite vendors and ask how they feel about possible changes in clientele if they feel adaptation is an option for them. As well as get to hear their stories on how their business came to be in order to get some background info on the types of people this change will affect. In addition to the sound of food being prepared, you will be able to hear orders being called out by the chefs, and the coasters eating the sounds of the neighborhood.

* * I feel as though I may be able to combine both ideas into one, and am leaning towards doing that and make the Volleyball establishment a part of the story for pitch 2**

I feel very overwhelmed going into photoville, very out of place. To begin with, I really don’t travel to Brooklyn because either there are parts that I don’t feel safe in or I find myself not having anything to do there because they tend to cater to tourists. Everyone seemed to have a very fancy looking camera and know how to use it and I’m here struggling how to focus my camera on me. All of these booths had very powerful and beautiful pictures some of my favorite exhibits were surrounding pressing issues. Others were simply just photos of the artist’s friends or family. One of the exhibits that caught my attention the most was called useless. Inside was nothing but a skull and photos of bison. Only later when paying closer attention to the images do I realize that the population number was above, in one here was the number 60 million in the year 1900 and then today there are only under 300 wild bison left. I think out of all of them that one was probably my favorite because it used no photographs but rather a video and left the majority of the booth very empty. It felt as though it was being very artistic by doing that. Other exhibits really include seem to express the beauty of the human body, which I feel I wouldn’t appeal to me at the beginning but afterward I realize those were my favorite pieces.

Also while I was there I got to talk with a lot of artists and other professional photographers some even showed me how to work my camera better and even took photos of me as well. As someone who isn’t really interested in this field, it felt very intimidating to enter a pit focused on it, but I’m very surprised as to the way others were very welcoming and friendly when wanting to explain Concepts. I was also very happy to see that the event not only showcased professional photographers but as well as up and coming artists and even high school and college students. The entire space felt very diverse and like it was addressing important issues it wasn’t just pictures of pictures.I definitely feel like my experience at photoville made me want to take photography more seriously not for a professional purpose but rather to be able to capture my life through such beautiful photos.

If I had the money to pay for some of the art that were on sale I would but sadly I’m still a broke college student.

Photo Essay Proposal

Even though over 85 million people in the United States own pets, there aren’t enough food and safety regulations put in place for the food they eat. Instead of making quality dog food that isn’t filled with preservatives and harmful chemicals, they get food that gets recalled all the time leaving nothing but negative repercussions for dogs specifically. Dog food is something that is available everywhere, I’ve even seen a Gas Station offer its own “ HomeMade Dog Treats”, this leaves dogs exposed and vulnerable. I plan on exposing the damages the lack of regulations on Dog food can have on the Dogs and their pet parents.

What I propose to shoot in my photo essay is the effects of going inn the journey of finding the best food for their pet( extra food being stored, confused pet parents, trips to various food stores The shots I intend of getting is of the different types of dog food, in addition I have reached out to a family freidn who is a Hoslitic Nuetrosit ofr dogs, who will show me her practice as well as the process she goes when explaining to pet parents the harm in the food they may be feeding their pets currently. I also plan on including shots of the dogs themselves.
