I plan to write my photoessay about New Yorkers on the MTA. New York’s trains hold people from every corner of the city and every walk of life. I will interview them about where they are going and I hope to talk to them about how their day is going, where they’re coming from, what type of work they do, or what their hobbies are. I am excited to capture diversity of the city, and am excited to push myself out of my comfort zone to speak to strangers. 

I expect to capture aspects of the different train lines: the graffiti, the conditions of the trains, the color schemes of the stations in different boroughs, etc. I also will be capturing the same train lines at different times of the day and draw contrast between the amount of people, the lighting, and the emotion in the train carts. Late at night trains can have a more somber, lonely energy, as opposed to trains during rush hour which are more hectic and crowded. I hope to capture and hopefully interview performers in the train cars and in the stations. I also plan on talking to small business owners like the street vendors in the stations. I am excited to photograph the outfits people wear on the trains and draw contrast between people going to work in the more neutral, monotone professional attire as opposed to younger audiences going to school in more casual, creative/expressive, and colorful clothing.

For my photo essay I would like to focus on the return of live music as pandemic restrictions loosen up. I think this would be more of a character driven piece as I would like to focus on how the performers’ careers were affected with a lack of live showings. There are a few restaurants with live music that I will be getting into contact with for this assignment. I would like to photograph the musicians while they set up for their show as well as taking photos during the performance. I think visually the focus would be on the expressions of the performers and the atmosphere of the show.

For my photo essay, I plan on documenting Global Citizen Festival. The event takes place yearly in Central Park but was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Global Citizen encourages people to come together in an effort to help the planet (by ending global poverty, for instance). By taking action, people were given the opportunity to win tickets to the festival. My goal is to capture the energy of the event and feeling of people coming together for a great cause.

For my photo essay, I will be covering Japan Fes 2021, an annual festival celebrating the rich culture of Japan through its cuisine. The event takes place on September 19th from 10 am to 6pm, so I hope to get shots all throughout the day with different kinds of lighting. I hope to get action shots, such as chefs plating their dishes and topping their meals with garnishes. I also hope to get personal and moments of decision, such as people enjoying music, dancing, looking at food, or about to take a bite from their food. I think many pictures with a low depth of field will be used here.

This is timely because it is an annual event that could not occur last year because of the pandemic. I think it is also powerful to see the congregation of people of Asian descent celebrating their culture proudly after the rise in Asian hate crimes last year.

For my photo essay, I would like to capture the after-effects the ongoing pandemic has had on the public transportation that so many of us rely on. Once Covid-19 hit NYC many aspects of our lives had changed and rerouted from the way we attend school, spend time with others, and the way we travel to our destinations. Looking back to before the pandemic, just the atmosphere of how public transportation seems worlds away. This is why I would really like to use this project to observe and make note of how such a huge part of our daily lives was changed over the course of a year due to the pandemic.

For my photo essay, I will be visiting the ‘Grand Central Food Festival Series’ that takes place every Friday. I plan to start at once end of the festival and make my way all the way to the end. The food festival lasts from 10 in the morning to 6 in the evening, which will hopefully provide enough time to capture enough different and compelling photographs. I want to capture the different aspects of the festival. The food and vendors will be a focus, but I also want to be able to capture the essence of community the exists among different cultures.

Hopefully, at the event, there will be visually compelling moments. This event happens every Friday this Fall so it might be beneficial to go on different weeks. However, I’m not sure whether or not I want to keep my photo essay contained to just a day at the festival.

I want to write about a recreational basketball league that has run in New York City since 2004 called The Dynasty League. I would like to talk to the owner of it to get more detail on the impact of Covid-19 on their business, as I know that all indoor courts were forced to shut down for around a year if not longer.

Since basketball is a live-action sport, there should a lot of opportunities for me to take photographs. I would like to take photos of the games along with photos of the organizer himself.

In my photo pitch assignment, I plan on capturing the joy of festive activities in an amusement park (six flags) which I’ll be visiting in October . Over the past year life has not been the same for many, especially for children who were forced to be at home due to the closing of schools. As a result, many were distant from friends and family which may have derailed their interest in being in public spaces. Or maybe some are super excited to finally be outside to enjoy the atmosphere with others.

As I visit this park, I am hoping to capture the emotion of relief, and joy as  families spend time together in an open space. I’d also like to capture how they are adapting to the changes in this ongoing pandemic.
