While returning from an English 2100 instruction session, I noticed that the Wall Street Journal had a table today on the second floor of the vertical campus. Because we have students asking about discounts, I will place the material in a folder at the reference desk. This month they are offering students a special rate for print and online–$24.95 for ten weeks, $59.95 for 26 weeks, and a year for $119. Two year subscriptions are available for $179, a 75% discount. Sometimes students want their own subscriptions rather than using FACTIVA. (Sometimes they don’t know about access on FACTIVA.)

F.I.T. video re library research
I don’t know how long it has been available, but a video on the F.I.T. library’s site about librarians helping students with research is extremely well done, especially if you like film noir.
resources on grommets
While at the reference desk on Friday, a student asked for help on grommets–the history, origin, how they changed culture and business. We found patents, articles in American Periodical Series, and some news articles about new uses of grommets. I found some other resources later so if anyone comes with this question, please let me know. Grommets are used in sails, tents, shower curtains, hats, shoes, bras, corsets, crack pipes, art works, cars, planes, tubes to help prevent ear aches, and many other military and industrial uses. A search of Westlaw Campus and LexisNexis found some cases in which failed grommets caused personal injuries. Some patent litigation cases have information on the uses of grommets. The OED was consulted for the origin of the word. Sometimes, in fashion, they are referred to as “eyelets.”

The Anne Frank house in Amsterdam has recently added the only known video of Anne and her family to YouTube, along with some other videos previously available only in the museum.
Login information updated
A small revision was needed to logon to the Money Market Directories, electronic version, and S&P provided it to me today. I updated the Wiki entry.
source for journal entries for factoring
This morning Joe and I helped an accounting student who was looking for help in
how to do journal entries for factoring (which is related to accounts receivable).
Here’s a source we found: Log onto Books 24×7. Select accounting as a topic (right column)
and then do a search for factoring. Among the results is a book The Ultimate Accountants’ Reference Handbook. Chapter 16.5 (which is listed in the chapters discussing factoring), has an example of journal entries. The student was very happy with this result.
Free trial to International Interpretations on CCH Accounting Research Manager
At the request of the accountancy faculty, we have a two week free trial to International Interpretations on CCH Accounting Research Manager. These are interpretations of International Financial Reporting Standards.
To locate the international interpretations, log on to CCH Accounting Research Manager through the Newman Library’s databases. Then, in the Quick Links, look at the Accounting. In the far right colum click International Interpretations. (This is listed as International, after the word checklists and above the word More.)
The free trial does not include access to these two titles, although they are listed: PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Manual of Accounting – IFRS for the UK or Financial Reporting Asia Pacific.
If you have any questions or comments, please let me know. Rita
Gauging employment prospects in NYC 2009
Late Friday I received a request from a member of the college’s administration for the top industries by employment in NYC. I found the information in Gauging Employment Prospects in New York City 2009, published by the New York City Labor Market Information Service, which was formed by the New York City Workforce Investment Board, CUNY and the Center for Urban Research.
Four sources for helping answer agriculturally related questions
Sometimes students ask questions that are agriculturally related. I would like to suggest the following as sources to be considered:
National Agricultural Library has a well known database called Agricola and has an Ask a Librarian Service.
Cornell University is New York’s land grant university and its agricultural programs and research are known around the world. Its extension service offers assistance.
New York State’s Agricultural and Marketing Department offers much information about NY State.
The Horticultural Society of New York City offers some assistance to all New Yorkers and has a catalog that can be searched remotely, and a beautiful library.

WSJ student discount
Sometimes students ask about subscriptions to the WSJ at a discounted rate.
The WSJ does offer student discounts as detailed on it website. Of course, I show the students the access on Factiva and ABI Inform Global but sometimes they want their own subscriptions.
