Additional Printers in the Library
Six additional printers are now available on the second floor of the library. Only two of these are in the printer room. Two printers have been placed near the stand up computer terminals and two more are adjacent to the reference desk just outside the printer room.
Quicksilver Titles
For the past week, I had been meaning to spotlight an interesting article from the 19 August 2009 edition of The New York Times about medical journal articles that are written by ghostwriters working for pharmaceutical companies. Today, as I sat down to find the article online, I was reminded of a not uncommon problem with article titles in newspapers: the title itself may not be stable. While the print edition and the online editions at Factiva, LexisNexis Academic, and New York State Newspapers all the Natasha Singer article as “Ghosts in the Journals,” the free version of the article on The New York Times web site has the article titled, “Senator Moves to Stop Medical Ghostwriting.” The date of that web version is also different by one day; instead of a August 19 dateline, it has one of August 18. It will be interesting to see which version of the article is the one that ends up in the Proquest Historical Newspapers database in a few years.
EBSCOhost Databases Back Up
It must have been a blip in our access that lead to our downtime a short time ago.
EBSCOhost Databases Down
I just let Mike Waldman know that at the moment we can’t access any EBSCOhost databases.
UPDATE: Access is back.
SLA NY meeting tonight is in the Subotnick Center
I just noticed that the “Today in the Library” notice about the SLA NY meeting reads that it is in Room 415. It is going to be in the outer room of the Subotnick Center. There is a sign in the lobby, but in case anyone asks at the ref desk, please direct the people to the first floor.
Series 7 exam review books on Books 24×7
We occasionally get requests at the reference desk for Series 7 exam review books. There are some available in the Finance Pro offerings of Books 24×7 for which we recently received access.
You can do a keyword search or if you select the topic certifications, these books, and others, such as the Wiley preparation for the CPA exam are available, and a series for the CFA exam.
Vendor Card Dispenser Problems Remain
The company that services our vendor card system did not let us know today that they left some of the orange 50 cent copy cards in the machine (as opposed to the usual 30 cent cards with 70 cents of value). If a someone gets an orange card out of the dispenser (a 50 cent card), you can send them to the chief librarian’s office on the 4th floor to fill out a complaint slip that will get them a 20 cent refund.
