New Database: Academic Video Online

After a brief trial, we now have access to a CUNY-wide subscription to Academic Video Online. The 73,000 videos in this collection are now all discoverable within OneSearch or by going directly to the landing page of the database, which is linked to on the A-Z databases page and the “Videos and Movies” database page.

If you go directly to the landing page for the database, you can browse the collection by scrolling down on that page. Another more fine-grained subject browse is available by following these steps:

Go to the landing page using our database link on the A-Z databases page

Click on the menu icon (the three stacked lines icon in the top left corner of the screen) to get to the navigation options:

Select “Collections” from the navigation options that appear on the left and then select “Academic Video Online” on the right:

New Database: Black Freedom Struggle in the United States

ProQuest has just launched a freely available database called Black Freedom Struggle in the United States. This new resource, which is now listed on our databases pages, brings together primary sources from 1790s to the present from a variety of ProQuest databases, some of which we already have access to and others that are new to us.

New Database: JoVE

Also known as the “Journal of Visual Experiments,” JoVE provides streaming videos that demonstrate lab techniques, methods, and experiments in the sciences as well as explains various scientific principles in different disciplines. Note that our subscription is only for some of the content from JoVE. We have access to:

  • JoVE Education: Biology (all 4 titles)
  • JoVE Journal: Biochemistry
  • JoVE Journal: Biology
  • JoVE Journal: Genetics
  • JoVE Journal: Developmental Biology
  • JoVE Journal: Neuroscience

Links to JoVE can be found on the A-Z databases page as well as the Biology – Databases and Science – Databases pages.

New Database: Arte Publico Hispanic Historical Collections

On the EBSCOhost platform, we’ve added a new database called Arte Publico Hispanic Historical Collections that features archival collections documenting the history of Latinx and Hispanic culture in the United States from the colonial era to 1960. Includes advertisements; books; broadsides and pamphlets; editorials; essays; letters and telegrams; newspapers; photographs; poems; short stories; and speeches.

New Database: Very Short Introductions

After a successful trial earlier this year with Very Short Introductions (from Oxford University Press), we were able to purchase one of the five collections (social sciences), which includes 100 books in the following subject areas: anthropology; business and management; criminology and criminal justice; economics; education; environment; human geography; politics; research and information; social work; sociology; and warfare and defense. Some of the books might be useful for faculty looking for textbooks or shorter course readings.

Records for each book should be discoverable in OneSearch in the next week or so. In the meanwhile, you can find a link to Very Short Introductions on the A-Z databases page and on the Ebooks – Databases page. If you’d like to browse the list of social sciences books we have access to, this link should work.

New Database: GuideStar

We now have a subscription to GuideStar, which specializes in providing information on close to two million nonprofit organizations operating in the United States. Each organization profile includes the following sections:

  • Summary (mission, NAICS, SIC, address, etc.)
  • Programs + Results
  • Financials
  • Operations (people, governance, partners, etc.)

You can also download relevant annual IRS filings (such as the form 990)  for most organizations.

New Database: MarketResearch.com

We now have access to MarketResearch.com, which offers market research reports on a wide range of industries and products.

As you may recall from 2013, when we last had access to this database, the individual pages that provide an overview of each report and a PDF “Download” button also include a scary looking price that can be safely ignored. Next to the price on each report page it says, “(Student downloads are FREE of charge – the price is shown for informational purposes only).”

A link to the database can be found at:

The reports in this database are not indexed in OneSearch, so the only way to find them is by searching directly in the database.
