Reference at Newman Library

Important Point about WiFi Access for Baruch Students

While helping a student at the reference desk get onto wifi on her laptop, I learned something new that I wish I’d know before. I was already aware that the only way Baruch students can log onto the “Baruch-Students” wifi channel is if they first register at the “myPassword” site (you can’t just go straight to the “Baruch-Students” wifi channel and enter your Baruch username and password; you have to go to myPassword first).

What I didn’t realize until yesterday, though, was that even after registering at myPassword, there isn’t instant access. According to the page on the BCTC site, Wireless for Students, you have to wait until the next day. In the meanwhile, you can still use the older “Baruch-WiFi” channel with your Baruch username and password.

Baruch College Wireless Connecting Changes

This is to remind everyone that we will be discontinuing the Baruch-Students wireless network at 6:30 PM on July 14. Thereafter, Baruch students will use the Baruch-WiFi wireless network.

Baruch-WiFi and Baruch-Guest will be the publicly broadcast networks for Baruch College until a third network is deployed later in the summer, offering the option of a longer log-in time and some additional access to internal network resources.

Baruch-WiFi is for the use of all Baruch faculty, staff and students. It has the same access rights as Baruch-Students.

Baruch-Guest is for the use of our guests.
We have two classes of guests.
One class of guests obtains Active Directory guest accounts through the Library and Help Desk, and they will use Baruch-WiFi.

The other class of guests is for special events and they are given accounts through application by the event sponsor. These are not Active Directory accounts, and these are the guests that use Baruch-Guest.

Re: New wireless network

Randy asked that this message from Arthur Downing be posted:

The new wireless network is now operational in both the Newman Vertical Campus and the Library/Technology Building.

Please direct students, faculty, and staff to use only the service named “Baruch WiFi” in these 2 buildings.  This is important because a device may default to one of the former wireless network names.

To help with the transition, the service named “Baruch – Student” will not be removed until July 15, but students can already start to use “Baruch WiFi”.

Guest accounts that are issued in the library will allow guests to log into “Baruch WiFi”.  Please do not refer library users to the “Baruch – Guest” network at this time.
