College Diversity

The City University of New York ( CUNY) is by far the most diverse of all universities systems. Colleges such as Baruch, Queens, Brooklyn and many more including community colleges like BMCC have open the doors to students from different backgrounds. Students at these institutions not only learn from professors, they also learn from their classmates. This enables students to gain more from their college experience. Other colleges in the United States should diversify their universities as well.

A “minority” problem.

imageNew York City is well known as the most diverse city of all. However, there are few New Yorkers who still feel as if they don’t belong in some parts of New York. This is the case for Fernanda Santos and other students from minority groups who attend Elite Schools. It is time for all schools in New York city to reflect the city uniqueness through their student body.

Minorities United

minority workers

Diversity does not stop at just the general population, but continues on into the labor force. Being the “Melting Pot”, New York City houses majority of the minority unionized workers. These minorities, which include African- Americans, Latinos, and other minorities, take the place of the traditional white men. It is not longer the Americans that need to survive now and reach for the pursuit of happiness, but the minority crowd as well. As our city diversifies even more, we will see the variety of ethnicity within the workforce come in greater amounts.

Downfall of Diversity

SORORITIES-articleLarge

It is true that racial acceptance is greatly increasing in America, but there are still those patches that we find that have not gone all the way. This is the case for some institutions like the sorority from this particular article. As the diversity in our country increases, one would think that the acceptance of this diversity would come along with it. While this may be mostly true, this article shows that the people of our nation are not always welcoming, regardless of socioeconomic status or family lineage.

Racial Unity

Not always has it been ‘normal’ to see white people wear dreadlocks or black people dye their hair blonde and that is what the article “In Looks, a Sense of Racial Unity” talks about. During the 1990s, fashion trends associated with one racial group suddenly started transcending to others, creating a debate about whether colored contact lenses, certain social patterns, etc. were acceptable with all ethnicities. While for us nowadays it is suitable to wear whatever fits our personality, I think it is interesting to recognize that such has not always been the case.

Baruch College Fair

October 10, 2013 was an exciting day at Baruch College because the Club Fair was held in the main gym of our school. This was a really fun event because all the clubs had tables set up with information about their activities and meetings, a DJ was blasting music and people from all years were gathered together just enjoying each other’s company. The Club Fair gave us the opportunity to get involved in the college life outside of classes and meet individuals that share similar interests.

Deal or No Deal: Love for All

nytimes struggle with race

Racial profiling is a common and unavoidable practice around the world. America, the land of the multicultural and the home of a variety of races, still does this but is beginning to be more accepting of different cultures. New York is home to a myriad of ethnicities, appropriately named the “melting pot”. Although the acceptance of race and interracial relationships is gradually increasing, internationally, people still struggle to embrace the love for other skin colors. Read about the interracial struggles of an international Korean and Indian couple in South Korea here.

The Melting Mosaic of New York

ny map mosaic

This map from a NY Times article depicts the racial and ethnic composition populous communities in New York City. “The Melting Pot”, a term coined by Israel Zangwill, defines the diversity of our city, New York, and our school, Baruch College. Both settings contain a wide range of foreign born peoples. In the future, it is likely that our mixture of cultures will expand and spread, in the city and at Baruch College.
