WEEK 2 BLOG POST

Summary

This week's reading is about presidency of Donald Trump and his years of ruling. How he walked away from the TPP agreement and Paris Agreement. US President is considered to be the leader of the world, whatever actions WHITE HOUSE takes affects the entire world. But, Donald Trump made a mockery of the word "global leader" or he did not have the maturity to comprehend the depth, weight and responsibility of a global leader. Instead of bringing the nations together he divided them and his actions turned other nations against United States.

Trump; whenever I hear this name reminds me of a very old friend of mine, who was confused about his “relationship status”. He wanted a marriage but did not know how to be a responsible husband. Likewise, Trump wanted power and the tag “President of the world” but overlooked his responsibility to unite the nations.

Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) on which former President Obama put huge emphasis on; is what I feel would have given United States a substantial advantage on trade’s and would also have also posed a better defence against China rising to power. But Trump withdrew from it in 2016, questioning it’s merit, starting a trade war with China and imposing trade barriers and tariffs on the neighbouring country’s, more so as a retaliation U.S faced the similar consequences of it’s actions. Trump also stated that “NAFTA was the cash cow of Mexico which took all the jobs from the United States.”, while I do agree with Trump in this case because of NAFTA U.S businesses were moving to Mexico for it’s lower labor and production costs.

As the the French ambassador posted in United States stated ”How do we make” our relations with America “work with a US leadership that doesn’t want to play the role of leader?”. The resemblance of this statement is uncanny with the ex girlfriend of my friend. She said something similar and left. Therefore Trump losing the 2020 presidential election did not come as a surprise. He put USA’s leadership at stake especially by underplaying COVID.

“…but overlooked his responsibility to unite the nations.”

Is it really indeed the responsibility of the POTUS to perform this task? Not sure where that is found in the US Constitution. If perhaps it is, how exactly and why would that occur? Wouldn’t executing such a role on a global scale undermine or ignore the sovereignty – or at the very least, differing priorities – of the other 192 countries?

Hello Mark,
It’s not only the job of the POTUS, but President of USA is viewed as the president of the world, every country as you have mentioned 192 countries look up to USA. It is very crucial to have a leader who has is very wise, and wise people understand their limitations, therefore they discuss before making any decision. I was not questioning the sovereignty but his wit. As you have seen in the past that the other nations usually follow what USA says. For example, right now USA pressed sanctions against Russia and other nations EU, Canada, Australia imposed sanctions as well.

Shamma,

I liked the candor of your blog post. You appropriately call out former president Trump for his terrible decisions, but you also point to other decisions (e.g., NAFTA) that you thought were right. A big part of the problem with Donald Trump is that he had no prior experience in government and was largely ignorant of all international issues. This became clear in many of his statements and decisions. It is also the reason that he became so easily manipulated by Vladimir Putin and why he stated at their Helsinki Summit meeting that he trusted Mr. Putin more than his own Intelligence community! –Professor Wallerstein
