Our first project for class was to write a 500-800 word news article on a current topic, issue, or event in New York City. We were required to do reasearch on what we were writing back, call and set up interviews, and write three drafts (which we were graded on each). Our interviews were not only with people we knew but also man-on-the-street interviews and bigger sources (doctors, police officers, etc.)
For the most part I enjoyed the project. I chose to write about the policy change on the small amount of marijuana. I enjoyed researching and interviewing a lot of my friends.
However the worst part was when I called places/people like Hakeem Jeffries or the Drug Policy Alliance no one ever called me back. The same day I talked to the woman about Hakeem Jeffries she said she would email me and she never did. That was the biggest down fall of the project. I had to use quotes from a Press release.
Overall I did enjoy doing the project and it showed me what it would take to be a journalist.
