1. Playlist Title: “Ballads for my Charlotte”
   This playlist which was made in the year 1772 and made full of songs that haven’t been composed yet is meant for Charlotte’s ears and Charlotte’s ears only. Also this playlist depicts my life here at Wahlheim.
   May 4, 1771: Radiohead- Everything In It’s Right Place
   This song truly captures the feelings and emotions I had when I first moved here. I wanted to move on from old life and start a new one. Sometimes in order for a person to grow they need to throw themselves in situations that doesn’t always comfort them. I made the decision to leave my friend Wilhelm and mother and start a new life here.
   May 10-12, 1771: Minnie Riperton- Loving You
   This is when I discovered the beauty of the gorgeous Wahlheim. I became infauated with it’s floral design and the vivacious spirit in which the people of Wahlheim inhabited. This is the inspiration I needed to help my art. I’m going to make this village my muse. Like I wrote in my journal today “I do not know whether deceitful spirits hover around this region or whether it is the warm, divine fantasy in my heart that makes everything around me appear like paradise”.
   May 15-22, 1771: Steely Dan- Deacon Blues
   This song starts of by saying “This is the day of the expanding man” and thats what I plan on doing. I plan on expanding my horizons. It was time for me to meet the people of Wahlheim. I noticed they were fond of me. Meeting the towns people like V. and the Prince’s district officer gave me a new perspective on the town’s people. There are people who run profitable businesses and some who are even educated. This Steely Dan song is not only uplifting like my spirits from today but also upbeat like the village of Wahlheim.
   May 30, 1771: John Martyn- Please Fall In Love With Me
   I thought of this song today while having a conversation with a peasant boy or servant. This song came to mind when he gave a description of the widow he works for. When he talked about how beautiful she was I knew he wasnt only infatuated with her but he truly loved her. You know not the beauty most men talk about when they’re describing a woman’s physical features but the beauty that goes beyond that. Like how amazing her soul was. Anyway I’m rambling but I think the title is self referential and and reflects how the boy feels about the widow. He is in love with her and I can tell he pines for her love.
   June 16, 1771: Justin Timberlake- Take It From Here / Rhye- The Fall
   This right here is the climax of this playlist. These songs depict the feeling I had when I knew I was in love with you. When I saw you sorrounded by several of your siblings I thought of our future together. I was entranced by your beauty. The mellow tone and sweet lyrics meticulously match my emotions I felt for you. – Take It From Here
   However Rhye- “The Fall” would play when you reminisce over the time we first danced. This song captures the bliss I had while dancing with you my sweet Charlotte. One of the lines even say “dont run away”. The way I felt when you would would dance with the other people and promise me one more dance. You were acting so chaste that day.
   July 26,1771- Jan 20, 1772: P.J Harvey- Is This Desire?
   The return of your fiance had really threw me in a loop. The days in which I couldn’t bare to see you with another man I pined over my desire to just have a glimpse of your face. All these conflicting thoughts for you have spiraled me into a state of confusion and depression. However I know I shouldn’t succumb to my desires and sin.
   Forgot to date this- The Peasant Boy’s Crime: Kanye West- Addiction
   I was shocked to hear that the same peasant boy and servant I talked to when I first came to Wahlheim was the one that commited this heinous murder. When I found out he killed his widow’s lover I knew it had to do with the love he had for her. This love soon became jealousy and possessed him to do something immoral. This song came to mind because it tells the story of a man who cant overcome his desires and vices. Eventually he succumbs to them and lives a life that just spirals out of control. However what scared me most about this incident with the peasant boy was I saw this as my future with you. I could empathize with the young one because I too felt this same emotion about you. I just dont want it to end up where someone gets hurt or even more dead. Still there is doubt in my mind that the latter might be the end result. There are lyrics in the song in which the protagonist admits that his vices are immoral but deep down he feels pleasure. He sings “Why everything that’s supposed to be bad make me feel so good”.
   December 14, 1772: Joni Mitchell- Blue
   This song was primarily placed here to make you think of the night I confessed my love to you. It’s a somber song because I knew deep down that no matter how beautiful this night was it would be my last with you. That night I surrendered my resistance to my desires and gave in. I kissed you and held you tight. I just wanted to be with you one last time.
   December 14, 1772 (After 11 o’clock) Kanye West- Coldest Winter (Tears for Fears- Memories Fade cover)
   The last song on this playlist was running through my mind as I wrote my last Journal entry. I’ve come to accept my fate and that in order to end my suffering for my love for you I must take my own life. I truly want to be an honarable and noble man but I know I cant while I’m still here and I feel this passionate about you. The lines in this song depict my last words to you my love “Goodbye my friend, will I ever love again”. Finally, I’m saying my goodbye to you Charlotte, you will always be my one and only true love.

2. Playlist (It’s not ordered in a particular way)
   1. Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne
   “Hey, hey/ You, you/ I don’t like your girlfriend/ No way, no way/ I think you need a new one/ Hey, hey/ You, you/ I could be your girlfriend/ Hey, hey/ You, you/ I know that you like me” If you replace the word “girlfriend” with “boyfriend” it better relates to Werther’s situation. During the dance, Lotte and Werther were enjoying themselves until a woman notices and mentions Albert’s name to Lotte. “Smiling she looks at Lotte … twice utters the name Albert very meaningfully.”(41) Since Lotte had to be reminded of her fiance, it demonstrates how she has come to like Werther. When Werther finds out about Albert he is shocked even though he knew she was engaged. Werther wants to be with Lotte.
   2. Sweet dreams by Beyonce
   “Every night I rush to my bed/ With hopes that maybe I’ll get a chance to see you when I close my eyes/ I’m going out of my head/ Lost in a fairytale; can you hold my hands and be my guide” Werther has trouble keeping away from Lotte. He always manages to find an excuse to see her, “ I’ve resolved more than once not to see her so often. Yes, but who could keep to that! Everyday I succumb to temptation.”(58) He would love any chance to see her. This sweet dream then turns into a nightmare when Albert finally returns, however, Werther still comes to see her.
   3. Someone Else by Miley Cyrus
   “If you’re looking for love/ Know that love don’t live here anymore/ He left with my heart/ They both walked through that door, without me/ If you’re trying to find pity well you need to look somewhere else/ ‘Cause I surely can’t help you/ I’m hurting myself/ I’ve turned into someone else” Werther is in pain because he cannot be with Lotte, she has his heart. This has changed Werther’s character as well,“The dread in his heart sapped his remaining intellectual strength, his vivacity, his wit…” (116)
   4. Tunnel Vision by Justin Timberlake
   “Didn’t I seem like I’m catching something/ That’s because it’s true/ I can’t deny it, I won’t try it/ But I think that you know/ I look around and everything I see is beautiful/ Cause all I see is you/ And I can’t deny it” Werther only sees Lotte and forgets about everything else. She is now all he can think about, “when Lotte directed the conversation to the others, that I noticed that all the while they had sat there staring with wide-open eyes, as if they were not sitting there at all.” (38)
   5. I would by One Direction
   “Lately I found myself thinking/ Been dreaming about you a lot/ And up in my head I’m your boyfriend/ But that’s one thing you’ve already got/ Would he say he’s in L-O-V-E/ Well if it was me then I would” Werther believes that he would be better for Lotte and that he loves her more. He thinks about it when he went to see Lotte, “isn’t it true that every paltry business transaction means more to him than his precious, exquisite wife?” (118)
   6. The Heart Wants What it Wants by Selena Gomez
   “You got me sippin’ on something/ I can’t compare to nothing/ I’ve ever known, I’m hoping/ That after this fever I’ll survive/ I know I’m acting a bit crazy/ Strung out, a little bit hazy/ Hand over heart, I’m praying/ That I’m gonna make it out alive…/ But the heart wants what it wants” Werther mentions how he easily listens to his heart, “ And I treat my little heart like a sick child; it’s every wish granted.”
   7. Can’t Remember To Forget You by Shakira ft. Rihanna
   “And I left a note on my bedpost/ Said not to repeat/ Yesterday’s mistakes…I keep forgetting I should let you go/ But when you look at me/ The only memory is us kissing in the moonlight” From what I can tell, Werther has traveled somewhere to forget about Lotte but cannot forget about her. “I have not had a moment, not once, in which my heart urged me to write to you; and now … here you were my first thought. As I came in I was overcome with your image, the memory of you…” (84)
   8. Jealous by Nick Jonas
   “I don’t like the way he’s looking at you/ I’m starting to think you want him too/ Am I crazy? Have I lost ya?” The peasant boy in the story is in love with a widow but she has feelings for another. The Peasant boy kill the widow saying, “No one will have her, she won’t have anyone.” This was a crazy act of jealousy!
   9. The feeling by Justin Bieber Ft. Halsey
   “Am I in love with you? Am I in love with you?/ Or am I in love with the feeling?/ Trying to find the truth, trying to find the truth/ Sometimes the heart is deceiving/ Can’t get out of my head, I need you to save me/ If I am delusional then maybe I’m crazy in love with you” Werther has gone insane with the love he feels. His heart makes crazy decisions for him and he can’t be saved, “You cannot be saved, you wretched man! I see all too well that we cannot be saved”.
   10. Love Lockdown by Kanye West
   “I’m not loving you, the way I wanted to/ What I had to do, had to run from you/ I’m in love with you, but the vibe is wrong/ And that haunted me, all the way home/ So ya never know, never never know/ Never know enough, til it’s over love/ Til we lose control, system overload” This song relates to how Werther has been in love with Lotte but cannot be with her because she is with another man. Werther had to take himself out of the equation so that Lotte can live without complications. Werther makes this clear in his letter to Lotte, right before he kills himself he says, “Lotte, of sacrificing myself for you! … if I could restore to you the calm, the bliss of your life.” (148)

3. Werther Playlist

   1. Akon- Beauitful
   In this song, the artist expresses his love for the one he absolutely can’t live without. “I have so much in me, and the feeling for her absorbs it all; I have so much, and without her it all comes to nothing.” I believe this quote matches quite well considering Werther is stating that he basically needs her.
   2. The Fray- You Found Me
   In this song, the artist explains how the person they love wasn’t with them in their time of need. It actually states in the song, “lying on the floor, you found me, you found me.” This reminds of when Werther was found after his attempted suicide, and the servant had broken the news to Albert and Charlotte. “Lotte hears the bell, all her limbs begin to tremble. She wakes her husband, they get up; wailing and stammering the servant brings the news, Lotte falls unconscious at Albert’s feet.”
   3. Akon- Don’t Matter
   In this song, the artist states that the opinions of others have no affect on who he loves. Akon sings, “don’t nobody wanna see us together, but it don’t matter no, cause I got you.” This reminds me of Werther and Lotte’s situation considering that nobody would want to see Lotte with another because she’s engaged already. “Sometimes I don’t understand how another can love her, is allowed to love her, since I love her so completely myself, so intensely, so fully, grasp nothing, know nothing, have nothing but her!”
   4. One Last Time- Ariana Grande
   In this song, the artist sings to her lover that she wants to be with him one last time. She’s sorry that she can’t give her lover the same things as another who is also in love with him. All she’s asking for is to see him one more time. This reminds me directly of the section where Werther goes to see Lotte for one more time, before he goes off and ends his own life. “I do not dream, I do not rave. Drawing nearer to the grave my perceptions become clearer. We shall exist; we shall see each other again.” Werther is referring to seeing her again in the afterlife, because after that moment, he will not see her in this world again.
   5. The Reason- Hoobastank
   In this song, the artist states that he’s found reason in living, in being. And the reason for him to become a better person is for his beloved. “Is this the destiny of man? Is he only happy before he has acquired his reason or after he has lost it?” Werther believes his reason for being on this Earth is to be with Lotte.
   6. Just You and I- Ricky Blaze
   In this song, the artist is stating that all he wants is his lover, and with the one he loves he can handle any conflict because he’s with her. “It’s true that nothing in this world makes us so necessary to others as the affection we have for them.” Werther is stating the need for one another through the use of love, and nothing makes us feel so important.
   7. All of the Stars- Ed Sheeran
   In this song, the artist is telling his love to open their eyes and understand the love that they have for them. “Heavens! what a torment it is to see so much loveliness passing and repassing before us, and yet not dare to lay hold of it!” Werther is saying that it’s a shame to have love in ffront of you and to do nothing about it.
   8. Keep You Much Longer- Akon
   In this song, the artist states that he wants to be with his love, but he simply can’t. They must part ways due to their life circumstances. “And what do they mean by saying Albert is your husband? He may be so for this world; and in this world it is a sin to love you, to wish to tear you from his embrace. Yes, it is a crime; and I suffer the punishment, but I have enjoyed the full delight of my sin.” Werther wants to be with Lotte, but he understands that he simply can’t be with her much longer.
   9. I Will Wait- Mumford and Sons
   In this song, the artists sing about how amazing their love makes them feel. Their lover is worth any troubles and they’ll wait on them forever. “I treat my heart like a sick child and gratify its every fancy.” Werther knows that no matter what he does, he can’t change the fact that Lotte is with Albert. However, he’ll still try anyway he can to be with her.
   10. Let It Go- James Bay
   In this song, the artist sings that sometimes you can’t change things, and you just have to leave things and people the way they are. “I do not shutter to take the cold, terrible chalice from which I shall drink the ecstasy of death! You handed it to me, and I do not waver. All! All! Thus all the wishes and hopes of my life are fulfilled!” Werther finally understands that he can’t change Lotte’s decision, he has to let go of the love that he has for her.

4. Playlist ” The heart of a Lover”
   1st song: James Blunt, “Goodbye,My Lover”
   Quote: “How happy am i to be away!!, Dearest friend, what a thing it is, the human heart! To leave the one whom i love so much, from whom i was inseparable”
   The songwriter is singing about a past lover who he is now separated from. He talks about how his lover may not feel as attached as he, and calls them his friend. This reminds me of the quote because, Werther is talking about how happy he is to be separated from Leonore.

   2nd Song : Selena Gomez “The Heart Wants What It Wants”
   Quote:”This heart of my rages enough by itself. I need a lullaby and i have found that abundantly in my homer. How often do i lull my rebellious blood to rest, for you have never seen anything so irregular, so impatient as this heart of mine.”
   Selena Gomez is singing about how her heart wants something hat she physically can’t have, which causes her unrest. This is relatable to Werther because, he always follows throughout the story what his heart wants instead of what’s is reasonable.

   3rd Song: Lupe Fiasco “Unforgivable Youth”
   Quote: “If we are to take pleasure in natural phenomenon, must it always be tinkered with?”
   Lupe Fiasco in Unforgivable Youth Lupe mentions a future in which humans/civilization as we know it does not exist. I believe this connects to the quote because Werther mentions how we tinker with natural phenomenon and, i believe this connects to how we now over hunt animals and violate nature.

   4th Song: Plain White T’s “Hey There Delilah”
   Quote: “Never in my life have i seen urgent desire and hot,ardent craving in such purity: indeed i can say, a purity such as i have never conceived or dreamed of.”
   I think this connects to the quote in that the singer of Hey There Delilah longs to be alongside her in NewYork City and it pains him that they are so far apart. I believe this is similar to the Desire that Werther mentions in the quote.

   5th Song: John Legend All of Me
   Quote: “I found so strong a personality expressed in everything she said, with every word i saw new charms, new gleams of intelligence flashing from her features which gradually appeared to blossom because with delight because she sensed i understood her.”
   This song relates to the quote in that werther is completely intoxicated with the beauty of Lotte. He finds himself washed away in her thoughts and in their conversations. This relates to the song in that it was dedicated to a woman that John Legend is involved with.

   6th Song:Shaggy” It Wasn’t Me”
   Quote:”We encountered a woman whom i had noticed earlier for the gentle expression on her aging face. Smiling, she lifts a minatory finger as we fly past, twice utters the name Albert very meaningfully”
   “It Wasn’t Me” reminds me of this part of the story because, she is essentially caught red handed indulging an other person in the treatment she would give Albert. In the song the person is caught cheating but denies it. Lotte wasn’t exactly cheating but might be partaking in actions with werther that Albert might not like.

   7th Song:Mr.Hudson Ft Kanye West “Anyone But Him”
   Quote: ” Albert has arrived, and i shall leave even if he were; the best, noblest of men, one whom i’d be ready to subordinate myself to in every way, it would be unbearable to see him take possession of such perfection.”
   The song Anyone but him is sung by Mr.Hudson who doesn’t want a women to be with a guy no matter how great he is. This is similar to Werther in that he says that he doesn’t care if Albert is the noblest of man, that he deserves the possession Lotte more.

   8th Song: Queen ” Don’t try suicide”
   Quote ” My hour has not yet come, I feel it ! Oh, Wilheim! How gladly i would have given up my human existence to be with that stormy wind and tear apart the clouds and seize the floodwaters! Ha! And might that bliss not be bestowed on this imprisoned creature one day?
   I feel like this song relates to the text because Werther talks about how much he welcomed dying at this point. In one of the lines of Don’t Try Suicide Freddy from Queen says “Don’t do it, nobody’s worth it” when referring to suicide. I think this is something Werther would have needed to hear.

   9th Song:Elton John “Sacrifice”
   Quote: “That i might have had the happiness of dying for you! Lotte, for sacrificing myself for you! i would die courageously, i would joyously if i could restore to you, the calm, the bliss of your life”
   The song is about making sacrifices, and Elton John even mentions making a sacrifice for the greater good. I think this is similar to the quote because at this point in the text Lotte is everything to Werther and in his eyes she probably is the greater good.

   10th Song:Exciter “Dying to Live”
   Quote: “At six in the morning the servant comes in with a light. He finds his master on the ground, the pistol and blood. He cries out, he touches him; no response except a death rattle. He runs for the doctors, for Albert”
   This song reminds me of this quote because, in a sense Werther is dying because he feels that it will make Lotte be able to live a peaceful life again. In one of the verses it also mentions trying so hard to live in the now that your found dead on the floor, which is reminiscent of what happened to Werther in the story.

5. #1 James Blunt – You’re Beautiful
   “I caught sight of the most charming spectacle that I have ever witnessed” (p.36). This is when he saw her for the first time and he was right away impressed by her. I chose this song because he was so amazed by her in the first moment like he just saw an angel. This song captures part of the story, he doesn’t know that now “but it’s time to face the truth, I will never be with you”

   #2 Vadim Kiselev – Imagination
   “I got out of the carriage as if in a dream, and I was so lost in my dreams in the midst of the twilit world that I hardly registered the music pealing down to us from the brightly lit hall” (p.39). He was so astonished by her beauty and by her conversation that he forgot everything around him. “My entire soul was drawn to her animated lips and her fresh, glowing cheeks! (p.39). this is like a dream just like this piece of music.

   #3 Stevie Wonder – Just Called To Say I Love you
   “You should see her dance! You see, she is so absorbed in it with her heart and soul, her whole body one harmony, so carefree, so natural, as if this were the only thing in the world, as if she thought or felt nothing else; and in such moments everything else surely does vanish from her mind” (p. 39). This song represents his emotion what he feels when he looks at her. This song is so carefree that nothing else in the world matters then this moment watching her dance.

   #4 Hans Zimmer – Tennessee
   “Never have I danced so effortlessly. I was no longer a mere mortal. To hold the loveliest creature in my arms and to fly with her like the wind, so that everything else around me vanished, and – Wilhelm, to be honest, I vowed to myself that a girl whom I loved, to whom I was attached, should never waltz with anyone but me, even if it were to cost me my life” (p.40). I chose this song because it captures all what he fells for her. He wants to be with her right and then and never let go of her. This moment with her is so beautiful, he touches her, feels her, it’s almost like they are together for that little moment.

   #5 Vadim Kiselev – Deja vu
   When she told him that she was as good as engaged “and yet it was entirely new because I had not yet thought of it in connection with the woman who in so short a time had become so precious to me” (p.41). He knew but didn’t want it to believe that she has someone else. When the words came out of her mouth he realized that it was too good to be truth that this beautiful woman would be single. This song is like a realization for him, sad, and heartbreaking.

   #6 Lionel Richie – All night Long
   “I sank into the flood of feelings that she poured over me with this byword. I could not bear it, I bowed over her hand and kissed it as I wept the most blissful tears. And looked again into her eyes” (p.43). This is how he felt and this is what he want it to do in this moment. This song represents this lovely never ending moment when he look into her eyes and the flood of feeling he had.

   #7 Passenger – The One You Love
   “Tomorrow you will stay away, and when tomorrow comes, again I find an irresistible reason, and before I know it, I am at her house” (p.58). Werther just can’t leave her alone and tries everything to see her and to be around her even if it’s only for a couple of minutes. He wants to be with her because she is the love of his life. He doesn’t want to change anything about her like in this song “If you find someone that loves you like I do, you’ve found the one you love”. It is like telling her what he feels about her.

   #8 Vadim Kiselev – Thinking About You
   “No, you will not fall! The Eternal One carries you in his heart and me. I see the handle of the Big Dipper, the loveliest of all the constellations. – O Lotte, what is there that does not remind me of you!” (p.147). every little thing he does reminds him of Lotte. With this song he would express how much she means to him and how painful it is not being with her.

   #9 Kiselev – Alone In the Dark
   “I have written a note to your father asking him to take care of my body” (p.147). Why should he live if he can’t be with the woman he loves? This is like a last call to her desperately wanting her to feel the same love he has for her. This melody captures the sad truth of his life that all he wanted he cannot have and the only resolution is to take his life.

   #10 James Blunt – Good Bye My Lover
   “Lotte, of sacrificing myself for you! I would die courageously, I would die joyously if I could restore to you the calm, the bliss of your life (p.148). With this song he is telling her goodbye and how much she meant to him “And I love you, I swear that’s true. I cannot live without you”.

6. The Sufferings of Young Werther

   These are modern songs that I believe Werther would put in a playlist for Lotte.

   Quote 1: To leave you whom I love so much, from whom I am was separable (Page 21)

   Song: “Let her go” by Passenger. Werther is saying that if a mistake happens that everything is coming down hill and this song represents that.

   Quote 2: Solitude in this paradisiacal place is a precious balm to my heart (page 22)

   Song: “Beautiful” by Carly Rae Jepsen. This is a song that talks about destiny and the suffering and bitterness but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

   Quote 3: A wonderful gaiety has seized my entire soul, like the sweet spring mornings I have wholeheartedly enjoyed (page 23)

   Song: “Shiny happy people” by R.E.M. This song talks about happiness. This is people and this happiness and the quotes also shows how Werther feels joyed.

   Quote 4: I have already shed more than one tear for the deceased (page 23)

   Song: “The way” by Ariana Grande. There was something that happened before them and this song would speak to them

   Quote 5: I am so happy, dearest friend, so deeply immersed in the sense of calm existence
   (page 23)

   Song: “All at once” the Frays. The song and the quote both speak of uncertainty about love.

   Quote 6: I do not know whether the deceitful hover around this region or whether it’s the warm divine fantasy in my heart (page 24)

   Song: “The reason why” by little big town. This is about how he feels after something better. This song speaks about how stuff happens after a break up or something good.

   Quote 7: Not a day goes by that I don’t sit there for an hour (Page 24)

   Song: “Shower” by Becky G. This song shows happy when they are together. But when he is without her all he thinks of is her.

   Quote 8: I treat my heart like a sick child it’s every wish is granted (page 25)

   Song: “Listening to your heart” by Roxette. This song talks about treating your heart as gold. It trusts your instincts. The song is saying listen to your heart which are the same.

   Quote 9: I felt that heart, that great soul in whose presence (page 26)

   Song:” I need your love” by Calvin Harris is a song that would defiantly fit into the playlist because it talks about the necessity of love and that seem to fit the feeling that Werther has.

   Quote 10: I have meet an acquaintance who has won my heart (page 34)

   Song: “Feels” (Clean) by Kiiara. There was so much felling that he felt. The song feels talks about all feeling that people experience.

7. First Day of My Life

   “It is better for me to see her through the eyes of her lover; it may be that in my own eyes she would not appear as she stands before me now. And why should I spoil this beautiful image?” (pg 34)

   A person is beautiful in the eyes of the person who loves them. When someone loves another person, to them they are the most beautiful person. It’s very innocent.

   It’s Ok

   “He loves Lotte more than anything in the world, he was proud of her and wanted to have her acknowledged by everyone as the most splendid of women (pg 117).”

   He admires everything about her. Werther seems to have a false sense of hope that he might be with Lotte someday.

   La Naissance

   “The human life is but a dream is something that has already occurred to many, and this feeling forever haunts me as well (pg 27)”

   This piece is hauntingly beautiful to me. When I listen to this I feel the ups and downs of life and how we feel the intensity of being here.

   “…his way of speaking revealed so clearly how beautiful, how alluring he found her and how fervently he wished she might choose him to wipe out the memory of her first husband’s failings, that I would have to repeat his speech word for word to make you feel the pure affection, the love and devotion of this man.” (pg 33)

   It is very relaxing in a different way. It is filled with intense emotion which I think shows the way the peasant was in love with the women. Although it was a bit melodramatic, while I was listening to this I felt a sense of peace.

   Emily, Sing Something Sweet

   “My entire soul rested on her figure, the sound of her voice, her demeanor (pg 27)”

   Werther was admiring Lotte; from her looks to her mannerism. Werther instantly become infatuated with Lotte at the ball due to her kindness and gentleness. It reminds me of this short song because of the lyric that says, “Emily, sing something sweet for me. I want to feel the warmth inside your heart.”

   Everything Reminds Me of her

   “I have not had a moment, not one, in which my heart urged me to write to you; and now in this hovel, in this solitude, in this confinement, with snow and hailstones beating against the windowpane, here you were my first thought. As I came in, I was overcome with your image, the memory of you, oh Lotte! So sacred, so warm! (pg 84)”

   Werther can’t stop thinking about Lotte. He knows that they cannot be together yet he spends time with her which makes it more difficult for him to not think of her.

   Earnestly Yours

   This songs gradually builds up and suddenly bursts with a feeling of distress which in the case is Werther emotions towards Lotte, or the emotions you feel in life. Sometimes you feel okay and other times the intensity of living hits you and feel like you can’t handle it. You find ways to try to make yourself feel better.

   Space Song

   “Love and loyalty, the most beautiful of human sentiments, had turned into violence and murder.”

   When I hear this song it is beautiful in a tragic way. It shows pain. At first is is mellow but it gradually builds up and suddenly bursts with a feeling of distress. It reminds me of this because it shows the light and how it can be turned into darkness.

   I’m a Fool to Want You

   “Doesn’t he already see in my affection for Lotte an interference with his rights, in my attentiveness to her a silent reproach. I know it well, I feel it, he is not glad to see me, he wants me to go away, my presence is a burden to him (pg 118).”

   Werther know he can’t be with her yet he consistently is trying to spend time with her anyway he can. He finds any excuse to be with her and she is okay with it.

   If I Don’t Have To

   “That I might have had the happiness of dying for you! Lotte, of sacrificing myself for you! I would die courageously, I would die joyously if I could restore to you the calm, the bliss of your life. (pg 148)

   Werther and Lotte are purely platonic. Werther believes he has interfered with the life of Lotte. He wants to die in the name of his love for Lotte.
