Racism in European Soccer

In January of 2013 the players of AC Milan walked off of the field during a game against Pro Patria due to raciest remarks. The remarks were made by Pro Patria fans that were sitting in the stands. These remarks angered Kevin-Prince Boateng a mid-fielder of Ghanaian-German decent, who then kicked the soccer ball into the stands and walked off the field. His team mates walked off with him. Boateng was not the only Milan player that was racial harassed ,Urby Emanuelson, Sully Muntari and M’Baye Niang were also harassed. This racial harassment lead to the first soccer game ever to be stopped. This brought attention to the racism that occurs among European soccer fans. In the Italian 2013 soccer season 25 racist episodes have occurred. In 2012 racist fines totaled $685,000. Pro Patria alone was issued $20,000. Some authorities blame the lack of education of clubs and fans as the reason for these occurrences. Some authorities believe that fining the culprits instead of the club which they are a fan of will also deter people from racial harassing players on the field. Boateng told CNN that FIFa and other organizations should not tolerate this type of behavior and that those who participate in it should be banned from attending games.

“Big Brother” is a Racism Lab

“Big Brother” becomes a Racism Lab

“Big Brother” is a reality show created almost thirteen years ago. It is a CBS competition where a number of young adults from all over America are thrown into a house to live together. They are completely isolated from the rest of the world, but are being watched carefully by cameras in the house. The goal is to remain the last one in the house, by avoiding eviction by vote each week. Thirteen years ago on the first season William Collins, an intensely political black man, was opposed in the house for his confrontational talk about race. Since then “Big Brother” has been very careful about maintaining a diverse cast but avoiding any racial vocalization, until this season. This season’s cast consists of a group of seemingly privileged white candidates who have not so subtly made racist remarks and aggressions towards one of the black cast members. The cast members racism at first was not aired by producers. But after online streaming revealed the comments, producers were criticized for not including them. “Big Brother” also recently began including the disclaimer that “the houseguests may reveal prejudices and other beliefs that CBS does not condone”. The show has suddenly become a means of revealing a truly hateful and unfortunate culture that still exists in society. And it seems to have taken thirteen years for the show to finally become comfortable facing this narrative.
The revelation of racial tensions in “Big Brother” were heightened after unfolding only moments after the Trayvon Martin case was closed. Viewers commented on the similarities between a seemingly racist juror and the jarring opinions of the white cast member. “Big Brother” has as the article states, become “a laboratory experiment in what happens” when racism is finally being exposed “blatant and overt” instead of it hiding in the shadows where its “accountability has been nil”

Black and White On Long Island: Like Oil and Water

On long island new york segregation is very prevalent. An example of this can be seen through the differences in garden city and Hempstead. The two towns are totally different in just about every way and the only thing separating the two towns is a sign. In the article it talks about the difference in experience from two residents of each town trying to sell their home. The family that lives in Hempstead can only get half of what the family the family in garden city could get if they both put their homes on the market.

During the Civil rights movement, segregation was being fought against on many different fronts. In 1963, you can add collegiate sports to the list. Leland Mitchell, a leader of his Mississippi State University basketball team, defied court orders from a chancery judge, and led his team and coaches to Michigan to play against Loyola University of Chicago, which had several black players on their team. Coming from the highly-segregated state of Mississippi, this game integrated those who would have otherwise been segregated, and marked the beginning of the end of segregation in collegiate sports. It was not easy, with the team having to leave Mississippi secretly or else be brought back to campus for discipline, but they succeeded. Though they ultimately wound up losing the game, there was a far greater importance to the game other than the end result. This game marked the start of integration throughout collegiate sports.

Butter Chicken in Ahmedabad

This article is about how a couple moved from India to America because they wanted more opportunity. Racism is involved in this because when they moved here, people would refuse to work with them. Also, people refused to believe that they were from America because of their accents. Also this article is about how people in certain cities in India don’t like Muslim people. Also there is a lot of tension between Hindus and Muslims. Another thing is that Hindus look down on other hindus that eat meat.

A quick response to racism at Oberlin College in Ohio.

Classes were canceled at Oberlin College in Ohio after a string of hate-related vandalism. These vandalism’s included the drawing of a swastika above the college fountain. The administration of the college canceled classes in order to promote a “day of solidarity”. Some students felt that the administration was not doing enough to protect them from these types of hateful attacks. While other students felt that it was a good quick response to a problem before it escalated further. The students believe that it is not one of the 2,800 students but an outsider that is responsible. Administration on the other hand is not sure.
