Blog Post #2: Ethos/Pathos/Logos & The Toulmin Method

In my previous English class at Baruch, I wrote an essay about globalization and how one culture can impact others. In this essay, I touched upon on the ideas of globalization and how it can affect a society in the long run. Likewise, I talked about the solutions for the problems globalization is causing. For this writing piece, it was required to incorporate one of the three modes of persuasion. Pathos and logos seemed perfect for me to use in order to get my argument across. I used pathos because I can talk about the everyday struggles of factory workers in Indonesia who works long hours with low pay. I talked about how poor their family living conditions were because of globalization. The use of logos was effective in my writing piece because I stated many facts and evidence to show the correlation between globalization and poverty.  Logos helped me incorporate ideas from philosophers on why globalization can harm societies. Looking over my essay, I used the elements in the Toulmin method without knowing what it was at the time. I started off my essay with a claim followed be the grounds to support it. The warrant was there and it was based on pathos and logos. The backing and qualifier were there. The rebuttal element was used or else it would be tough for my readers to accept my argument.
