Here is the link to the course syllabus that I’ve reworked and made (I hope! :-)) more engaging for my students — https://docs.google.com/document/d/179KAyp1PraiYDPse1BWUYfWAvQEJdm_o7OUz1ialfT4/edit?usp=sharing

That certainly looks more engaging than my syllabi! I like the idea of the scavenger hunt. Are you planning on awarding prizes for completion? It may also be fun to add an Easter egg or something – I’ve been seeing a meme going around about a professor who puts in something asking students who find it to send her/him a picture of an otter for extra credit.

The picture of an otter sounds like a really fun extra credit! I would like to learn more about the scavenger hunt too. How will you track completion? Will students submit the sheet you have attached?

Thank you, Amy, for your feedback. I have to admit that this is the most engaging syllabus I’ve ever designed! 🙂 I like your idea of there being a prize for the scavenger hunt and especially if they find the “Easter egg” — that’s a great idea! I’ll take some time during the break and flesh this out. Thanks for coming alongside and helping me think this out. 🙂

This is so cool! I love it!

Is the syllabus an editable document that the students will be able to add in their own introduction? I think that’s a genius idea that will help the students feel like they’re truly a part of this singular, living doc.

I really like the idea of a scavenger hunt as well, and perhaps sending it to you is part of the scavenger hunt. For instance, they have to email you at the correct address and include a link or a downloaded doc to the scavenger hunt they’ve completed. This just opens up the line of communication and also teaches them Google Docs skills.

Hi Cathryn!

I’m also working on revising my course syllabus as my teaching artifact and I love the idea of increasing engagement through a scavenger hunt. Perhaps you can use typeform or google forms to collect results. Also, do students need to ace the scavenger hunt to receive the extra credit? Happy to learn more about your artifact.

I really like this! I think you have a really inviting tone in your syllabus and like the different questions you ask for the scavenger hunt. These are total suggestions, but since it is an online class, maybe it could be helpful in addition to the syllabus/scavenger hunt would be to put them into breakout zooms and ask a question on the scavenger hunt about the people in their group and something about them? That way, you get the knowledge about the course as well as they have someone they can get the notes from if they are out (always engaging to meet new people)
