There is Beauty in the Struggle

Do the ends justify the means? Throughout the story, beauty is around every corner. From the prince, to the places the Swallow has been. What does it all lead to? The Swallow was in love with the Reed because of her beauty. The Happy Prince is the most beautiful of all. The Swallow recounts stories of the beautiful things he has seen and the beautiful things he will see. The Swallow even had a “golden bedroom.” (page 2) The prince lived in the wonderful Palace of Sans Souci when he was alive. It is no secret that the Swallow loves beautiful things. He mentions the beauties of Egypt, including: “tomb of the king,” “The Second Cataract,” “The Temple of Baalbec,” and the weather. After the Swallow decides to stay for good, he recounts stories of places he has been. These beauties include: The Nile, the Sphinx, “The King of the Mountains of the Moon,” and so on and so forth. Little did neither the Happy Prince nor the Swallow realize that the struggle they went through lead them to the ultimate beauty, heaven. The real beauty was in their actions. The good deeds and helping others really made a difference in their lives and the lives around them. That is why G-d himself requested the “two most precious things in the city.” (page 8)
