Brooklyn: My City

In the last few classes we have talked a lot about neighborhoods and “The City” and I couldn’t stop thinking about my city; Brooklyn. Everyone always says how Manhattan is the city and how its the center of New York, I can’t disagree, but I don’t think of it as the best part of New York because it doesn’t encompass the best part, in my opinion. The small “cities” or neighborhoods are the real spirit of New York, only natives or people who have lived here long enough understand this. Brooklyn is the greatest part of New York because its the biggest neighborhood. There are dozens of neighborhoods all over Brooklyn, but one thing is for sure, no matter where you’re from, we always have your back. There’s a saying, “You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us.”

The culture of Brooklyn is the most unique part of it. Many people speak of the diversity of New York as a whole, but just look into our “city” and you notice Brooklyn has every culture, race, and ethnicity possible within every little section. You hear it in our “Brooklyn accents” how we are different from all other New Yorkers. Our attitude and friendliness make us the center of unique, we’re the glue that makes New York what it is. I recently saw a Broadway musical over the break called Newsies and it was amazing, a New York musical straight from the streets of the 1920s. My favorite part was how big of a role Brooklyn played. The play was about the kids that sold newspapers on the street and how they wanted to strike for fair wages, but they needed Brooklyn to make it work. Brooklyn’s Here was my favorite part of the musical. The culture is represent through all types of mediums, but my favorite is the music that comes out of this magnificent borough. My absolute favorite song is by the artist Mos Def and how he encompassed all of Brooklyn and the way I feel in his one song; Brooklyn.

One Response to Brooklyn: My City

  1. Hey Anthony, I’m not from BK but I was babysat in Williamsburg as a child and can definitely agree with Brooklyn having its own culture. I have tons of friends who reside in BK and I do spend a lot of time in BK as well so I can definitely agree that BK is a unique place and deserves the renown and reputation it withholds.
