Don’t Kill Your Mind, Nourish It

The human mind has amazing capabilities. Yet it seems as though we waste too much time on pointless things like learning about the personal lives of celebrities and athletes, which doesn’t benefit your mind or soul. Should we care what the first lady wears? Or Beyoncé? Or any other person for that matter, famous or non-famous? We were recently talking in class about what subjects we should focus on in school. I think we need a little bit of everything in order to be well-rounded. We should also focus on what we do with our spare time. Are we going in the right direction in this society? Instead of indulging in celebrity gossip for hours, I suggest we start doing new activities, which can be much more productive. Instead of wasting our brain power on nonproductive activities, we should be nourishing our minds and bodies!

New York has countless possibilities for wonderful and productive activities. One of them is the colossal Central Park. It may be a little chilly to go and exercise or play sports in the park right now, but once spring arrives, there’s no excuse! If you’re like me and want to get in shape, but get discouraged when you’re panting after a little run, start off slow! Running requires endurance and you can’t expect to be good at it the first time. Perhaps you can try power walking, followed by jogging, and when you feel ready and comfortable, running. Maybe some of you can join me on my journey to good health! Apart from running, there’s so much to do in Central Park, from sports to simply exploring the beauty of nature (which is unusual in NYC). Here are some links if you’re interested in trying out some activities in Central Park.

photographer

If you wish to simply take in the beauty of Central Park, why not try photography? Anyone can have access to a camera now and most people enjoy taking pictures of things or places they like. Are you a lover of nature like me? Bring your camera and let’s take pictures together in Central Park! 😀 Love people? How about you take pictures of people you see in New York that interest you? Just like another blogger mentioned Humans of New York blogger does with his time. Photography helps us explore this large and beautiful city and you may eventually discover a hidden gem. Please share it with me if you do!

Are you not up for leaving the comfort of your warm home? You can try multiple, fun activities! Like making a chicken parmesan sandwich, which is way better than wasting $5 at Subway, and you actually know what’s in it! Instead of filling ourselves up with those deliciously greasy, but absolutely mouth-watering Burger King Whoppers, why not learn how to make a healthier, equally delicious one at home? I know you may be shocked, but there is such a thing as delicious and nutritious!

I know you may think that knitting is only for grandmas. I assure you, it’s not! I’ve already met two young ladies at Baruch who are into knitting. It’s not only therapeutic, but it can also save you big bucks! Why spend $30-50 on a knitted scarf, when you can learn to make an equal or better quality scarf yourself? You can knit it to your liking of patterns and colors. Plus, it’s fun!

If you’re into learning new things like me, you can try learning how to play an instrument or a new language! Learning how to play an instrument can be so much fun, and who knows, you may get discovered someday. 😉 Learning a new language can benefit you greatly in this multilingual world, and earn you some extra points at your future job.

writing

Last but not least, writing can be therapeutic. You can write songs, poems, journals, etc. and let your soul write for you. Spill all your feelings out on those pages. It’s better and less expensive than drinking your problems away. Yes, I know the age limit for drinking is 21, but I’m pretty sure most of us have had at least one drink in our lifetime, while others drink till their drunk (which is obviously an escape). But that’s another conversation altogether.
