Capitalism

Reading “The Lost Beautifulness” by Anzia Yezierska got me thinking. It reminded me that no matter what we do in life, it’s always accompanied with some sort of struggle. Nothing comes easy. Here in New York, I feel it financially. We live in a capitalist society where every individual seeks opportunities to make money, unfortunately it always comes on the expense of the other. As soon as Hanneh’s landlord saw an opportunity to make more money, he raised her rent without thinking twice about it. He even explained himself by saying “In America everybody looks out for himself.”

Dollars funnel.

I feel frustrated when I have to deal with the financial aspect of school. I pay 15,000$ to study at Baruch College. On top of that, I had to pay 170$ for my math book and 150$ for the calculator. I just don’t understand why they make it more difficult on students instead of supporting them. Why do books have to cost 170$ anyways?? I’ve never seen a book that costs so much! And I’m sure it’s only going to get worse… In his last speech, Obama talked about the importance of higher education. So why do I feel that it’s me against Baruch College? Will I be able to graduate or will Baruch take all my money before that?
