I would be lying if I said that I appreciate living in New York City every day. But there are certain moments where it hits me that I truly live in the middle of the greatest city on earth. Sometimes it’s when I walk out of my apartment on a gorgeous day and look down 1st Avenue as the sun streams by.
This time, it was when I went to the Uprights Citizens Brigade, a comedy club on 26th Street in Chelsea. UCB is extremely famous, founded by comedians like Amy Poehler and home to many more. The scene is intimate and gritty – it feels like 100 people crammed into a basement because, well, it’s 100 people crammed into a basement.
It is an improv show, and it is hilarious. This group of sketch comedians are extremely quick, and I found myself laughing often. It is hardly the first time that I have been there, but there never fails to be a surprise. This time, Seth Myers of Saturday Night Live fame was randomly part of show! It was one of many small moments that make me realize that I live in the greatest city in the word.
